Driver rider communications
« on: February 14, 2009, 10:35:10 PM »

I'm looking to get a com system so my wife can yack at me and maybe listen to her ipod. Don't want to spend a bunch of money, maybe a couple hundred at most.  I've been looking on the internet and thier seems to be hundreds of these things. We use open face helmets, if that matters and I was wondering if any of you guys have some input on this and can point me in the right direction. It's something I need to get set up with before the Colorado ride in July. Got a few bucks coming back on the taxes and thought I'd try to figure it out now. ???
Thanks

You must be a newly wed.  Otherwise why would anyone want to ride thousands of miles listening to the natter nagging of a wife when you can't turn it off! :ohwow: :stickpoke: :pot:

My wife and I hve been using this for about a year.  It works pretty good until you get to highway speeds, then it's hard to hear.  Not perfect, but the price is right.  Search around and you can get it for about $60.

I just happen to have a communications device made by IMC motorcom.  Its their model number MIT-100U.

Not only does it have an intercom for rider/passenger, it has interfaces for audio, mobile phone and two-way radios like FRS radios for bike to bike communications.  The kit of parts includes parts for mic/headsets for both open face and closed face helmets.

I researched this for some time before buying this particular set up.  Its not the most expensive way to go, but very robust.  It is brand new in the box, never taken out, never used.  I purchased this as a surprise for the wife.  But after I purchased it, we decided to go with simple an Apple IPods for music using earbuds....no communications rider/passenger.  Wife and I decided we wouldn't listen to the same music anyway.  I thought she would be happy to be able to communicate, boy was I surprised.  ;D

I'll take $200 for it shipped to CONUS.

I looked at the J & M.  I just couldn't justify the additional monies if I was able to find a unit that was acceptable for less money.  The IMC unit came very highly recommended and it was much less the a comparably featured J & M system.

I use the Autocom Active-Plus unit. The kit includes everything you need, including the helmet headsets and microphones.
I've had it for about two years now and love it! Has all the features you need.
I use mine with full face helmets. Never tried it with open face helmets... wind noise might be a problem with those.
The control box mounts under your seat.
Here's the link. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I hate it admit it but I don't understand any of that stuff. :banghead: :cuss:  I don't know if a BlueEar thing will work with I-Plod, GPS, XM or talk to a CB  or fit under a helmet or what?  Is it really wireless?  Is there something out there that will do all that stuff that I don't need an Obumma bail-out to buy?  If so, who knows how to install it?  Explain it?  I think I want something like My Favorite Martian but without the antennas.

On I-20 west of Fort Worth is a little town named Gordon, TX.  There is a radio shop there called Clay's Radio Shop.  I spoke with them at the Dallas Int'l Motorcycle Show a few weeks ago and they seemed very knowledgeable.

Here is their Website:  http://www.claysradioshop.com/
