How many photographers?
« on: January 10, 2009, 02:10:30 PM »

My daughter bought me a nice camera for Christmas and I've been trying to learn as much about it as I can...from taking an online course to taking literally hundreds of photos. I was just wondering if anyone here was a pro or had experience with DSLR's. If so, post some pics and tell something about your settings. I'm still kinda stuck in the auto mode, trying to learn a little about composition and light. Here are a couple of mine, one is an abstract that was part of a assignment on one of the online courses.

If you don't love what you're doing, then don't do it.
Your chances of success are directly proportional to the degree of pleasure you derive from what you do.

When you are out taking pictures, take several of each shot. First in auto mode, then in manual. You can use your in-camera light meter to determine your exposure settings, but write them down in a small notebook. After you after finished shooting take the time to compare your auto modes to manual mode pictures.
Don't be afraid to experiment with different exposures.

Nice to see a thread here about Photography. It's been a "hobby" of mine for many many years. I've owned numerous SLR's and one DSLR.
One thing you may want to invest in is a good photo editing application. There are many out there. Some are better then others. I use Photoshop. The current version is CS4. It's rather expensive, but there are older versions at a cheaper price. I use CS2 and it works well for me.

Here are two pictures... the first one is your original.
The second one is what I did in Photoshop. Most are subtle changes and probably won't be noticed unless I point them out...
I took the lines in her forehead out.
Removed some blemishes and smoothed out her skin.
Added color and contrast and sharpened the overall picture.
Scroll between the two pictures and see if you can see the difference.

I'll try to post some of my pictures later. Gotta go for now.

Here are a few shots I've taken over the years.

This shot is of my bike soon after I bought it, photoshopped into a sunset backround.

Her Eyes were still a little dark. I lightened them up more than I usually would so you could see the effect.
Normally, I wouldn't have lightened them up this much.

Hats off to Brian (Patty?) for taking the "editing" well! Laughing, I mentioned this to my wife yesterday, and she mentioned that this may not be taken so well by a lot of women and their husbands, especially on a public forum...  :c
