You can put it in your jacket, saddle bags, or tank bag.  If it doesn't register, then they take a picture of your license plate and just add the normal charge to your account.  I go through it all the time without having the tag on me.

What he said.  I keep mine in the little tank bag I always carry.  Nice thing about the bike is that you can go around the gate at the small toll booths.
