Down Shifting Problem
« on: October 24, 2008, 07:06:03 AM »

Recently my 1800 is having trouble down shifting.  Up shifting is ok.
Doesn't matter if I'm moving or still, No clutch position seems to be
any better than another.  I have noticed that if I lift up on the shifter
slightly, not enough to shift up, it seems to grab the current gear and
allow me to down shift.  It's as if the shifter is not "rebounding" fully
after a down shift.

Anyone had this problem?  Ideas ?

Thanks,
Robert.

Retros have a well documented history of shift linkage problems that a good cleaning and lubing usually cures.  I'd give that a go.

You can also try easing the clutch out a little. Not enough to move the bike while trying to downshift. This seems to get things moving in the right direction. I've had this problem with my Kawasaki, too. Just let out a little on the clutch and it will start downshifting. Pull the clutch back in and it will keep shifting.

I don't care what other people think. They don't do it very often!
Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

Ok clearly now "dirt" was the problem.  The shifter is not
rebounding.  I opened it up as far as I could go comfortably
in the garage and it's hanging somewhere internally.  The
linkage seems to be fine.  Shifted with my hand while on the
stand,  Up worked like a charm, but down, the shifter just stays
down.  I was due for the 16k mile service anyway so I took her
in.  oh and inspection was out as well.   Should get her back
on Wed.

Thanks again for the input.
