nasty shimmy
« on: May 25, 2008, 11:15:35 PM »

i got a problem, I have a vicious shimmy when i take both hands off my bars. Takes about 1-2 seconds of decellerating and its gets pretty gnarly. Granted i dont take my hands off the bars too often. Im suspecting a warped rotor. It didnt develope overnight but I got to talkin to my soon to be bro in law and he thinks it might be the rotor too. I was in a pretty good wreck last year and nothing on the fron end was said to be damaged but Im thinking otherwise now. Anybody have some experience with this and any clues what else it could be? thanks in advance

Steering head bearings? Have you replaced the originals with the ALL BALLS bearings? I know that I have a shake in the front end between 45-35 on deceleration. If this is when you have it then you now know where to start. I have the stuff to do mine but waiting for a session where someone has experience and the proper tool to remove the races from the old bearings.

Thousands of hours and lines of type devoted to this subject.  Go to VTXOA board and search "wobble"  Have fun!!

I did mine... Completely fixed the wobble!!!

It's real easy... Pound the old ones out with a screwdriver, put the new ones in, and torque to spec. After some miles (I did 100) retorque. Easy as pie!!

And I dealt with that damn wobble for a LONG time, but it took 1 hr and 35 bucks to fix!

my steering  head was too losse when I brought it home new.. :o ::)..noticed it right  off the bat......tightened it up to "my" specs......(which embrace the K.I.S.S. method of thinking).........
......how I do that is ,tighten until the wheel will not turn when the bike is leaned. It dosent take much, and will not hurt anything at all. ....its designed that way .....Now if ya wanna change bearings....I suspect that will help.....go ahead....me? Ill be ridin! LOl
Good luck, and keep it simple.

I have been fighting this with Honda for 2 years.  I could not go above 70 mph on the way back from Snook a few weeks ago.  I took it in and the said my tire was cupped.  I am now getting the tappered baerings installed and new tire.  I'll yet you know it is better next week.

mine does it when I decelerate from 70+ I let off the bars this evening a few times while goin 35 45 and 50 and it  didnt wobble at all. I havent tried it lately over 70. I increased the tire pressure this weekend, I had been runnin too low of a pressure I dont know if that has anything to do with it, I ll find out tomorrow. Either way Im probabaly buyng those bearings.

Great decision... It was the best damn $35 I ever spent...

Danny (xriderntx) sent me a PM with some good advice when he did his. I followed his advice and it worked great. Honestly, I have worked on cars for years, but minimal bike wrenching experience, and it was easy as all hell... Something you may consider doing at the same time is fork springs. Hell, it's already torn down and you won't have to d*ck with them again in the future....

Holler at me if you have any questions or if you want me to forward Danny's PM to you..

wow board is back. I tested it out last night several times on 635. It never shimmied once. maybe it was the air pressure. Im still gonna get the bearings.
