New Member with a few questions
« on: July 07, 2006, 08:09:29 AM »

Hey guys,

I just bit the bullet and bought a 05 1800 F and LOVE it!
I've been scowering the VTXOA board and this one for any info I can absorb and have found this to be extremely useful.

I have got to get a new exhaust system for this bad boy, but have a few questions for you guys first.
I have pretty much decided to go with the HK Sideburners and a Thunder Mountain Tornado air kit.

While I'm doing this, I will go ahead and remove the Pair valve.  (A week ago, I had no idea what that was)
I'm not going with the Fuel computer for now.

Questions:

1. Has anyone heard a VTX with this combination and if so how did it sound/run?  Will my wife hate it while she is on the back(she also wants it much louder since her dad and brother both have loud harleys)

2. If I remove the Pair valve, will I still pass emissions in the great country known as Texas?

3. What is the meaning of life?

4. Is all of this pretty managable for me to do myself?

Thanks everyone and look forward to getting to know ya.

1.  You'll probably hear some air sucking in through that air kit IF you can hear it over the sideburners.  If you and your better half want loud...you'll get it.

2.  There are no emissions and if they do come out with it, you're bike will be grand-fathered into 2005/2006 inspections.

3.  42

4.  There is a wealth of information on the pair and installing pipes and it's all very manageable to do.  The pipes are easy.  The pair is easy as well, but somewhat time consuming.

On a side note - Make sure that once you remove your pipes you take out the old exhaust gaskets.  They ARE there, but sometimes they are crushed flat and are hard to see.

I could have sworn they tested bike emissions in Texas, well that is good news.

42 huh? Reminds me of one of my favorite places, the Dixie Chicken.

Spent many hours playing 42 in that joint.

Yeah, The Dixie Chicken is always dark, and dusty, but I love the good country music, beer, dominoes and aggies that reside there.

Welcome Texag. Sorry we dont have all of our old posts and stuff, but the hackers hit our old site like Clinton on fat chicks or Bush on mispronunciations! They wouldn't  leave  it alone! So, all our archived data is not available, except the last two months worth since we got our new, less hacker friendly format up. It's a bunch of good folks talkin, not like some other boards you may have been to.

If you've heard one set of Sideburners you've heard......nothing since.  They're the loudest pipes available for our bike that I know of and they do well for power also.  Putting pipes on the VTX is tricky but once you've done it you can do it again.  Trick is to put the rear header in first with the tip of the pipes tilted up. Then lower the tip so the front pipe rotates up into the header port.

Make sure you get new exhaust gaskets before hand and yes there are old ones in the head. You'll think they're not there but they are. Feel and you'll feel the ridge of them.

PAIR is simple enough, but be sure to get the blockoff plates.  The rubber caps will crack and you'll have to re-do them so don't go that route.

Thanks for the info,

One more question.

Will the Sideburner for the C model work on the 1800F?  They don't specify any for the F model.

The pipes should fit ok.  They changed the location of the fuel pump on the new model and as far as I know that is all that changed on the engine.

I read where you are NOT going with any type of fuel management system.
I think you will find the bike does not run well and will pop a lot without something to get the fuel/air ratio back to the correct ratio.  After installing a Power Commander and having a map done my bike runs like a wild cat.

The fuel controller decision is kind of a wait and see.

According to Tapper, it is not a requirement but may help.

I'm already dropping almost 1 large on the intake, exhaust etc.  and want to see how it runs with out the PC3 first.

welcome to the board. as far as the questions go ...

1. haven't heard that exact combo, but the sideburners are loud. (in a good way) :)

2. as it stands now bikes are not checked for emissions. however, basically in the state of texas if
the vehicle was manufactured with an emissions system it's supposed to stay on the vehicle. you
may also want to check if this could lead to any warranty issues.

3. just being alive. ;)

4. if you have any sort of mechanical sense you can do it. otherwise, once you get all your parts see if
you can't get a tech session going in your area. everyone loves a good tech session.
