Oil on floor under back wheel???
« on: May 13, 2008, 08:02:41 AM »

My bike's (2003 1800C) been sitting a few days and now I've got an oilish fluid under the back wheel about a 2 foot circle. It didn't run down the wheel. My guess is that it's drive train fluid but it didn't come from drain hole. Maybe from inside the hub? Rear brake (and front) pedal feels fine so I don't think it's brake fluid. Anyone else had this happen?  Any tips as to what to look for???  :-\

pull the fill plug and look.  The final drive oil should be "level" and not running out of that hole, but if you shine a light, it should be JUST about ready to pour out, with the bike on a flat level surface on the side stand.

That fill plug, btw, goes on at something really light like 9 pounds, so don't torque the heck out of it or you'll destroy it.

yeah, I read that about those - they'll break. Like I said, it didn't leak at the drain plug but maybe inside the hub. Is that possible? There was some dirty oil/grease on the bottom of the hub where the wheel meets up. I replaced my back tire a few months back (went to the darkside too). It's got me worried I did not get something tightened enough or back together just right.

the 1300's will leak from a seal around the shaft of the shifter linkage behind the left side engine cover if the crankcase breather hose gets kinked

I didn't suggest removing the fill cap to investigate if the fill cap is where it leaked, but to verify the oil level in the final drive.  If it's full, you know it's not final drive oil, eh?

it's not the final drive fluid. It's full. It's either brake fluid or someone spilled something near my bike. (I park in an apt. parking complex). The fluid on the ground is clear and clean so it's not oil or the final drive fluid (as it was a bit dirty). Took the bike out for a while and everything seemed fine so for now, I'm assuming someone spilled something on the ground by my bike.

It was fish oil?  At least your bike is getting enough omega fatty acids...
