My "X" has started whistling?
« on: April 25, 2008, 04:48:09 PM »

And no it ain't whistling Dixie!   ;)

It's a whistle or a chirping that is in rythem with, and sounds like it's coming from the rear cylinder. It's not extremely loud but I can slightly hear it riding down the road, and idling at a light. It's not always there when I first start up the bike.

The Honda Dealership had it a couple months ago for an good looking over and fluid inspection/changes.

Any thoughts on where to start investigating what it could be coming from?

I appreciate any help.

Might check and make sure your exhaust header flange is tight at the head, could be by passing a little exhaust or check the heat shield around the exhaust pipe itself.

Robert,

If it is making noise while idling, take and cut off three feet of water hose and hold on one side to your ear and move the other side around the motor to find where the noise is coming from. It works really well. Hope this helps.

Might want to check the vacuum hoses. Does it still run the same?

Another good source of 'whistling' may be your intake air box.......... O0

Not that I have any idea, but if your bike is fuel injected like mine, I recently found a whiny / whistling  sound and have been told that my fuel pump is starting to go.

Sorry guys, thanks for the suggestions from you all!
Unfortunately I've only had time to ride it to work and back a few times and of course the darn noise won't come back??? Maybe a good thing? I've checked what connections I could without a noise to follow, they seem okay. I'm leary to run my bike for long in my garage as it's surrounded by apartments above, behind and to one side, soooooo afraid of my pipes getting complaints from the neighbors.

Still hoping it comes back so I can nip this thing in the bud!

Thanks for asking David!

I put on Vance/Hines exhaust that chirped and I wrapped the baffles
(the skinny part in the middle) with glass insulation and it stopped
and now just has the deep throaty sound...pretty cheap fix
