Hit-and-run driver strikes, kills motorcyclist

10:27 PM CDT on Friday, May 2, 2008

KHOU.com staff report

HOUSTON -- A motorcyclist was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Friday night on the East Freeway. Investigators said the cyclists’ bike was dragged for more than a mile after the collision.

The fatal accident occurred on Interstate 10 at Sheldon Road in east Harris County just before 8 p.m. Eyewitnesses told police that the van that struck the motorcycle rider erratically crossed over four lanes of traffic before striking the cyclist.

The unidentified man on the motorcycle was thrown from the bike. The driver of the van that struck him continued on driving and even exited the freeway for Market Street – about a mile away – with the bike stuck underneath the vehicle before he was stopped by other drivers who witnessed the collision.

Those fellow drivers blocked the van driver in until investigators arrived to take the man into custody.

The driver of the van, an unidentified man, was taken to a local hospital for drug and alcohol testing. No charges had been filed yet, but were expected.

My thoughts and prayers for the victim and his family.
KUDOS to the other drivers who blocked the van driver in so he couldn't escape!!  O0
Hopefully, it will be possible for some sort of justice to be served,,, (too bad the van didn't mysteriously erupt in a ball of flames with the driver IN IT!!)
I find it very hard to be sympathetic to the van driver, no matter what his 'problem' may be, (can you tell?) and I find it even harder that we taxpayers will have to 'foot the bill' to take care of him and his 'problem' now,,, This is truly a no win situation,,,
