techie question
« on: April 30, 2008, 10:10:32 PM »

All of the sudden my internet is slow as can be it is slow as dial up used to be possibly slower  >:(. I know there are some sites out there that can analize and fix somethings and was hoping someone could recommend one or something else to try. I currently have DSL with comcast.

I have already done the obvious like disk clean up and analized for defrag.

Hello,

Since you have already cleared the cache, deleted your temp files....  I would suggest that you shut down your PC, disconnect the power from the DSL modem and/or router.  Wait 30 seconds, power on the modem, wait for it to come up completely (jnternet light on).  Plug in the router and then resart your PC.

Once you do that go to http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and see how your speed compares to your ISPs stated speeds.

There is a good chance this will resolve your issues.  Run the speed test a few times, it will be different but you will get a good idea of where you stand.  Make sure nothing else is accessing the interent when you run this test for best results.

Congrats on the Overlord status, Sherri!

Here is a thread that I participated in, over on the Feejer board. Results were positive, so take a look.

Have you installed anything new on the computer? I know the newest version (7.0) of Internet Explorer does run a little slower than versoion 6. Also, do you have current virus/spam protection software? Viruses and spyware will cause your computer to slow down a lot. Let me know if I can help. I work in the Galleria area. Warren

So you decided to skip the Computer Guy, huh?   ???

Lately, I have been having some of my clients experience the same thing in The Woodlands area.  We have been switching out the cable modems, and that has been solving the problems for the most part.  Just take the cable modem & power supply over to the location in the Grogan's Mill Shopping Center, and they'll swap it out for a refurbed unit.  Remember how your network cables are plugged into the cable modem & router.  When you get home, turn your computers off and plug in just the networking cables into the cable modem & router, and screw on the coax cable to the back of the cable modem.  Then plug in the cable modem power adapter.  I can't remember if you have a router or not.  If you do, you need to keep the router's power off until you get the cable modem powered on first.  Wait for the "cable" or "ready" light to go solid green, then plug the router's power adapter in and let it come up.  Then you can turn your computers on in any order you'd like.  If you don't have a router, then skip that part of the instructions.

There still could be a bunch of crap on the system from downloading "free" stuff, or there could be viruses on there.  So if the cable modem swap doesn't work, it may need a good cleaning.

Oh, and I know your address, so the invoice is in the mail!  ;)

I get the same prob...Im using iolo system mechanic 7 pro, and the tools are fabulous.....it works evertime, and Ive yet to get slammed by popups, viruses etc....it even deletes phishing cookies and unused downloaded programs that may cause the slowdown problem.
hope that helps...
