LED's causing battery to go dead, need help
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:31:06 PM »

Here is the problem, installed LED's on a 03 Retro, over a year ago, over the past few months the battery has been going dead while the bike is parked with the LED's on. There are approximately 15 pods on the bike, connected to a switch-fuse-postive post, the other connected to the negative side of battery. Last night and again this morning a full charge was put on  the battery, my tester read 13.5 volts, I disconnected half the pods and let the bike sit for about 2 hrs with the LED's on, came back and again put the test light and it read approximately 12 volts, I turned the key on which turned on the healdlight, light bar and the remaining stock items, looked at the test light again it was well below 5 volts, I heard the fuel pump wind very slowly, push the starter button and I get nothing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unless something was/is grounding improp on the led's, it sounds like your battery is weak, maybe a dead cell, or the charging system isn't recharging properly. If you start the bike, rev it to about 2500 rpm and check the voltage across the battery terminals while running, it should read 13-13.5 volts. Does it? Check the battery voltage immediately after turning it off. What does it read? Does it start if the leds are not left on overnight? With the switch off, is there any spark at all (best done at night in dark) with the led switch off if you disconnect the led circuit from the battery? Disconnect the LED circuit overnight and check the voltage of the batt in the morning. Any higher?
