Coil and plug wires
« on: April 14, 2008, 10:26:57 PM »

Two questions for you fart smellers....errrr....smart fellers

1) I know this ain't normal on a car, but are VTX plug wires , when a dumbass pulls on the wire and not the boot, supposed to have the wire come out of the boot?  :-\ SOMEONE I KNOW   :-\ did it. The bike still starts and runs, but just wondering if this was normal...

and

2) where is a good source for coils and plug wires (only coils if #1 is affirmative) other than the stealership? I can't find the damn things anywhere.

These are for a '03 VTX 1300 Retro...

thanks!

I did this once on my 1300 and put the wires back as best I could, I  also ripped the boot on one of them.
I took the bike in to Honda of Houston for an oil change service and they replaced them and didn't even tell me they were broken.
I think I got lucky.  :D :D

Is it normal?? am I normal ???

The boot has a screw that the center of the wire threads onto; it's kinda like a wire nut in reverse. You can thread it back up, but you need to be sure that you get the screw into the core of the wire. I know that there are other options for coils, but I don't have a reference handy. Try a search on the VTXOA Tech Board.

Hipshot is correct about the wires, just screw 'em back in. not sure about the coils either. so was this the problem you were having with the bike?

You and Jay nailed it...

The bike was running real rough after my plug change and one (rear right) was wet-fouled...

I took it loose, trimmed some of the wire off to clean it up, and screwed it back on... I'll be damn if it didn't fix it.

Now I just gotta take Trent's damn 235 jet out of it and put it back to normal (read: not full throttle all the damn time!!)

Thanks hipshot and Jay...see y'all at BBT ONSTAGE!!
