1st Flat tire
« on: April 05, 2008, 05:38:38 PM »

Was out for a short ride today, getting the bike inspected and taking the long way home. I must've seen hundreds of other bikes, until my tire went flat.  I never saw another bike while on the side of the road. Luckily I have a caring wife who is always willing to come to my rescue.

I had posted this about 2 years ago, but I see that it may be time to reintroduce or refresh some memories. :-X :D

I have one of these, and have used it twicw, once on someone else's bike, and then on my own. I see that you have a Neo. I have a C model, and it fits under the right side cover of a C perfectly. That way you'll always have it with you.

There's many different kits, and ways that you can make your own, so shop around for what's best for you. One thing I can assure you, I don't leave home with out it.

I'll have to get one of those kits. My wife brought me  a can of Fix A Flat, which according to the label you shouldn't use on a motorcycle tire, and my compressor. The Fix A Flat didn't work, but it did allow me to find the hole. The tire inflated just enough to get me to Wal-Mart, where i bought a plug kit, and used their air hose to fill it up. I think the kit mentioned in the above posting would hae been a lot easier.  Thanks

I imagine if you broke the bead, that CO2 kit isn't going to work. Back a couple of years ago, when Tom had his flat on the way to Cooper's, (pics of the event have been retired...), we tried a cartridge kit that I think Wayne had, and it resulted in the CO2 blowing by, and causing the ozone hole to get just a bit bigger...  :o

Not every flat results in a bead break. A length of 1" nylon strap takes up little room, and can be used to reposition the bead enough to inject air (or CO2) to pop it in place. This works better with the Schraeder valve removed. If you're at a loss as to how to tighten the strap, grip the strap ends with needlenose pliers and roll the pliers. I've seen a tool similar to a strap wrench that grips the strap and is tightened with a ratchet, but I've no idea where to get one.

I can remember a strap (metal) used by the old time gas stations to push the bead back to the outside with some kind of a ratchet.  I can see where a strap would work with wheel still on the bike, but only if you can get the weight off the wheel.  If it's like mine was a couple years ago, that's not the easiest thing to do.  We did get it off the ground, but the bead was broken and like Jeff said the co2 didn't provide enough of a burst of air to seat the beads and we didn't have a strap either.

I now carry a compressor along with the plugs.  I'm not sure the compressor will provide enough air if the beads were to break again, but at least there could be continuous air unlike what comes along with the co2 cartridge.  Having a strap on hand to get those beads back on the wheel is the key to getting any air in the tire.

Tom, I've used a strap successfully with the wheel still on the ground; you have to pull the strap a lot tighter that way, but if you can't get the tire off the ground.......

Other than being hit by an unaware cager, I think getting a flat is my next worst nightmare.  I guess now I will have to get a kit because it was mentioned.  Better to have it and not need it approach.  My fallback is I have AAA RV so at least I can get towed.

Compressor and plug kit is a good thing. Has come in very handy on the road before.

I've never had a flat, thank the powers that be, but I have heard a bunch of people praise this product:

It is a sealant that you shoot into your tire and it seals up punctures when they happen and helps alleviate flats.

I had a blow out last year on FM 455 in the middle of no where.  I have a patch kit plus a doner hose I bouth off of a BMW web site.  It is good for transferring air from a spare or truck tire to your tire.  I put in the plug and waited for a farmer to come by.  Sure enough in about 20 minutes one arrived got his spare and pumped up my tire with his spare.  Y'all might check into a doner hose.
