So if I rode to Denver...
« on: May 25, 2006, 09:04:58 AM »

how would the performance of my 1300 be affected?  I'll be staying at over 8000 feet and right now I'm just over 1000 feet in Decatur.  I suspect that since the air is thinner up there I'll be running rich?   Is it even that big of a deal?  If anyone has been on a ride in the high mountains, I'd be interested to hear about their experiences as far as performance is concerned.

As the altitude gets higher the octane gets lower.  By the time you reach Denver you'll be using 85 octane.  The only time you'll notice a perfomance decrease is when you climb Pikes Peak or Mt. Evans  the thin air will want to idle your bike down.  You can compensate by increasing your idle.  We had our idle adjustment maxed out when we got to the top of Evans around 14,000 feet.

your bike will probably run richer. you may smell that, or see your pipes are a little extra sooty. In bad cases, the bike will bog down.

you can always change the clip on the needle in your carb, lean up the AF mixture.

you can always lean it out here, before your trip if you are concerned about it.

Check the owner's manual.  As Brian said, you will need to fiddle with the "d" screw on the carb.  You may notice a lot of back firing but feathering clutch and throttle will keep that down.  The first year I went, I didn't make any changes.  The bike had all the power I needed by there was excessive backfiring.

Last year both Brian's and Jason's bikes did excellent.  Well - except for Brian running out of gas at the top of Mt. Evans and he coasted 20 miles down the mountain to a gas station!!!!  I bet that was a heck of a ride.

I'm Jason, and I had absolutely no problem at all on my 1300.  But, I do have an aftermarket exhaust, air intake & jet kit, so that may have helped.  We rode all the way up to Mt. Evans, and the bike performed flawlessly.  There were a few backfires, but those could be controlled by coming off the throttle easier.  Even though you are supposed to be running richer, I actually had improved gas mileage.  On one leg of the trip, I averaged 57 mpg...but most of the time I was in the high 40s and low 50s.  I normally get 40-44 mpg around here.

So I actually rode to Denver (Evergreen) this past Friday thru Monday ~ just under 1600 miles round trip and my 1300 performed flawlessly.  The only thing I noticed was a little popping when I let the throttle off too abruptly ~ just like y'all said it would.

I also have first hand proof that the speedometers are off by about 10%.  I was asked to pull over by one of Texas' finest state troopers who said I was going a little fast (75 in a 70 outside Quanah) and I know my speedo read about 85.  I think he felt sorry for me when I told him I left Denver that morning and asked him if I could sit in his air conditioned car while he wrote the ticket (it was 100+ degrees!) because he let me go.  My faith in the system is restored!

Sounds like a great trip to me.  I wish I could go back to Colorado this year, but the funds don't know how to keep up with my spending!  :)

I got a ticket coming back from CO. in 04. He got me for 85 in a 70. I was just damn glad he wasn't set up a couple of hills earlier. It would have been bad. When he clocked me I had just rolled of the throttle from running 110. There are some long lonely stretches in North Teaxs.
