tire question
« on: September 05, 2007, 10:17:48 PM »

OK I went darkside, and I love it, nuff said. But now I need a front tire, and I know I cant put a car tire on the front. So dont worry about that. Anywho, Lookin in the J&P catalog today for fronts, and ther ereally arent that many of the 150's fronts available that arent over priced, so my question is.....drum roll.......would an equivelant size rear tire be a problem on the front???? Im ducking while waiting for answers thanks   :o

I'm not sure of the differences involved, but I do know they have a rear or front differentiation between them, so I'd suppose it wouldn't be OK for a rear to be on front. Pick your poison, but I've been getting 20 K out of each of my last two Front Avon Venom R's. You can't beat 'em in my book! Stock Dunnie=7 K.
I'm getting 11, 13 ,and 12 K out of my last rear venom R's, Of course, one of them was "scarred up" ;D

With all the money you're saving on the rear tire the front shouldn't be a problem............. My last fron Metzeler (a 130, not a 150) was good for over 23K and still had some tread left when I changed it.

The difference is how the rain grooves are placed to shed the water. O0 Front and Rear Tire Matching

For optimum performance, it is very important to correctly match your front and rear tires. Riding your motorcycle with an improper mix of radial construction tires with bias or bias-belted construction tires is dangerous. Your motorcycle’s handling characteristics can be seriously affected. You could have an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death. Consult your owner's manual or your local dealer, for the proper tire replacement.

-Mount tires marked " Front Wheel" on front positions only and tires marked "Rear Positions" on rear positions only.
-Never mix Radial construction tires with bias or bias-belted construction tires.
-Some motorcycles may be equipped with Radial tires. Consult the motorcycle manufacturer before equipping replacement Radial tires to insure the proper specification and combination for your motorcycle.
-A new front tire equipped on a motorcycle with a worn rear tire may cause instability.

I'm sure the tire manufacturers would tell you not to put a rear-designated tire on the front; for liability reasons if nothing else. I guess you'll just have to experiment if you want to go that route. You could end up throwing away the cost of a rear tire going that way. I'd have to guess that different tread patterns could result in different handling qualities, but I've no idea if they would be subtle or conspicuous. Good luck!!

I have the Venom R's front and back and they're much better than the stock Dunlop's I had on there. I hear Metz's are pretty good to but I haven't ever tried them. On VTXOA it's pretty well 50/50 on the Venom's and Metz's.
