oil consumption

OK, here's what I got. Yesterday, stop and go traffic on the HOV on 290. Got off at Huffmeister for those of you in this area. About a block from Cypress North Houston the bike starts making all kinds of racket. Still running good, just noisey as hell! Pulled into an O'Reilly around the corner and shut it down.
Checked the dip stick...where's the oil? Just the bottom end shows any at all. 2000 +/- miles since the 28000 service. No leaks anywhere. No smoke. No nothing except the noise. Put 1 1/4 qrts in and she's happy again. On the way home today, noise again, but this time it's more like a rattle in the front area. Checked the oil when I got home, at the center hash mark. Pulled the plugs and they are still clean. Noticed that the radiator shroud seems loose at the bottom. Don't see any connectors on the bottom other than a plug on the brake side.
Any ideas? Or am I dealer bound tomorrow?

First question would be when was the last time you checked the oil?
Was it full?
There is only 1/4 inch between FULL and LOW marks (1300, don't know about the 1800). If you have the bike leaning just a bit it will be off. Heavy braking or an off camber turn can make the oil move away from the pickup and if it was low to begin with you may have picked up some air in the oil lines. Did the noise sound like the valve train? I just changed the oil in my 1300C and what I drained out was about 1/2 pint shy of what I put back in with about 2000 miles on the oil. Oil and Filter change and I put a full 4 qts. of oil back in (Rotella T synthetic).

JB, was expecting the question after I posted.
. Checked 200 miles ago....4 days to work and back. On the 1300, there is only a hash mark at mid-point on the flat. It has always been on this mark for the last 29800. All of a sudden.... the only major change was the stop and go traffic. Oh yeah, it always sits straight up flat. Had it triked at 28000 miles. The statement about turning was interesting. It corners real strong so the oil could have moved "abruptly" a time or three. Yes, it did sound like valve train at first. After I added the oil, I took it easy going home, about 3 miles or so. Today, the sound was more like a vibration rattle. Thats when I noticed the shroud seeming to be loose. Are there any 'fasteners on the shifter side? I can pull it away from the rad. quite easily. I tie wrapped it for a test drive, but could not tell on a short ride. I guess tomorrow will tell?
Thanks,
Louis

You might want to pull the air filter and see if you are pulling oil from the vent tube. With the extra weight it now has and the heavy throttle ( we've all heard you
) it may be pulling more through the air cleaner.

DAR.. oil in the bottom of the air cleaner, but not 1 1/4 quarts worth. Still seems like that would have shown up on the plugs.? Thanks, something else to watch.

I've never heard of anyone NOT having a little "pool" of oil in the bottom of the Air cleaner Pacrat. Check for a pm.
