Left crankcase cover- need help-modified
« on: July 24, 2007, 09:00:27 PM »

2003 1800C
I Would like to hear from someone who has actually removed their left crankcase cover before.
I am trying to replace my left crankcase cover because it has a small hole in the bottom. I have taken all the exterior bolts out and when I tried pulling it straight off it feels as if it is still connected internally with a spring type resistance towards the front of the case where the gear/sprockets are. I stopped immediately and looked at the manual which has not been a help. Any insight on how difficult this will be and what I should do next? My concern/fear is that when I pull it away from the bike the gears/sprockets will come apart.

If you're talking about the large rear-most cover then just pull it off.

If you're talking about the front-most cover that actually covers the end of the crankshaft then you're in for more effort.  That cover actually IS the crankcase cover (unlike the one on the right side of the engine which is a fake that covers the timing access.  For the left cover you'll actually be breaking the HondaBond sealant seal to remove it. You'll also be pulling the slave cylinder which is attached under the rear-most cover and you'll be pulling the dipstick with it.  I would probably remove the rear cover, remove the dipstick, remove the slave cylinder, remove the bolts, then find a good place to place a stick or block from the opposite side and 'bump' the cover off with a mallet.

Now, I've never had that particular cover off, but just from my memory that's the basics.  You should be fine to pull the slave cylinder but be careful as it might have some spring tension on it from the clutch basket on the other side.

If you've broken the seal, and you're still feeling the 'spring' type hold on the cover, it may be that you need to pull the slave cylinder off the cover and check for a snap ring or keeper on the clutch rod.  You could be pulling on the clutch springs on the other side.

Just some thoughts.

BTW - I thought you sold your bike?

Rob,
I haven't sold the bike yet...

This has actually been an interesting and challenging endeavor.
I received some very helpful advice from Moekazi on the VTXOA sight.
He explained the resistance I was feeling was actually a magnetic pull from the stator and etc.. (check out the thread on VTXOA 1800 tech)
So I was able to get it off and disassemble evrything except a small bearing which is actually pressed into the cover. I called 4 different Honda dealers for that bearing, none in stock.
$20-40 to remove the old one and plce into new cover. I finally called Maxin in Plano and although they didn't have it he was the first to recommend a bearing company. Pervis Bearing in Fort Worth. (I had already tried cross referencing the stamped number at my father's Automotive Parts house, with no luck) So I called Pervis and they have it in stock for $11.00. I'll pick it up after work today and hopefully re-assemble everything late this evening.
The good thing about all this is the experience and knowledge that I am getting and can now be helpful to others who post a similiar situation on the websites.

Take care,
JD
