Red Temp Light Goes On
« on: July 01, 2007, 01:00:20 PM »

As a breif history, I have just returned from a 3500 mile trip to Yellowstone and Sturgis. About 600 miles into the trip my red water light started coming on. I stoped and checked the water level. I added abount 6 ounces of water. This helped for about 30 miles when it came on again. Well knowing that bikes can run without a water cooling as I have had many bikes without water and that the fins on the engine would remove the heat I continued to ride. To make a long story short, I rode about 2000 miles with the water heat light coming on and off. There seemed to be no reason for it. Sometimes at 80 it would come on and then go off. Sometimes sitting at a stop light it would go off.
Also I had problems with the strater switch. I had to take it apart and reset the brass contacts to have it start again with the button. Prior to this my buddy had to push start me.
So my question is has anyone had this water temp problem?

You MAY just have a short in the system, causing the light to come on. Those fins WILL NOT cool the engine if the coolant is gone. How much coolant are you losing? Where are you losing it from? Need more info. Could be the water pump, could be the radiator, could be a short.

When your light comes on, is your fan running? Does it smell or feel extra hot? I would be really concerned about where that 6 oz of coolant went and look for and fix this problem asap. The starter switch is not that uncommon to have to take it apart and clean it. Like Jim said, it could just be a short in the wires, maybe at the temp sensor, or the temp sensor itself going bad, that's where I'd start lookin after making sure of no leaks.
Oh by the way, this is a water cooled machine, the fins don't cool AppleSauce, oh may help in the cooling process of the coolant some, but wuthout coolant in the system, you'll smoke your motor.  O0

Not sure if this helps, but like in a car if you have water disappearing see if you can see a milky color in the oil or on the cap or dip stick..
Hope that's not the problem, if you do then you may have a cracked gasket and hopefully it has not done too much damage.  :-\

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the suggestion, I have also looked on Big Larry site and he has some good info on the subject. I have not been on the bike since I got back and because of the rain I guess I want. I will go through each and every item you have suggested. We don't have a good dealer here so we have to do the work ourselves. Just for your info and not suggesting anyone does this I did run 2500 miles with the light coming on and off. Flying through the rockies and the Black Hills. It was still running like always Fast.
Guess I got lucky, I sure thought the coolant was back up for city stop and go. Live and lean and sometimes you get lucky.
