VTX front axle Bolt
« on: July 03, 2007, 07:23:27 AM »

2 quesrions: 1. what is the ft.lbs.torque setting for the axle bolt?
2. are the inside bushings between the fork and the wheel suppose to rotate? I'm assuming they should.
had to take the tire off to repair nail hole. When i tighten the axle bolt i get a thunking sound as i spin the tire. So maybe i tightened it up too much?

all the Best,

67 FT-LBS. You do have the right collar(thinner) on the right side and the left collar(thicker) on the left side? Right?

And no. The collars do not turn. The forks mash the collars to the bearings inner races.

The collars are different and must be on the proper side or the wheel will hit on the brake caliper.

If you follow this link  http://www.hdlparts.com/  it will take you to a page that will give you access to a schematic of the parts you are looking for. Click on parts finder on the left and then enter your bike model and year. Then pull the parts menu down and click on front wheel and it will show you an exploded view  of the wheel assembly.

I have found to that if the axle is not in the proper spot that the whell will hit or drag. I've had to loosen mine before and tap it in just a fraction and then retighten it.

I use this thing all the time even though I have a service manual. A pictures worth a thousand words.
