A word of caution on hydraulic levers and tight bike covers
« on: April 14, 2007, 09:36:58 AM »

My bike has no protection, it sits outside 24/7. About five days before Mardis Gras, a hailstorm was approaching, so I put the Dowco cover I've had for about ten years over it to protect it. The dowco has been used maybe ten times in the ten years. It is the biggest they make. With my trunk mounted behind the passenger seat, it pulls the cover reeallll snug. 1800's have a hydraulic clutch. If your cover is too tight and it keeps your lever pulled in, it will "bleed"  off, and you may end up doing what I had to do...bleed the system before you get to ride anywhere. If the system hadn't leaked off and the clutch springs were compressed for that period of time, I guess i might have needed to replace the clutch springs also. I made it to Mardis Gras about two to three hours late, because of this. I will make wedges to put under the levers before I use it again, to keep them from pulling in and leaking off. I guess I was just kucky it didn't keep my brake lever pulled in too. The brake could do this on you 1300 riders, just a word of caution. or, if the cover is left on too long, a 1300s clutch springs might be weakened from staying pulled in too long. Probably never happen to anyone else but... you were warned!

As an alternative to the $$$Dowco$$$ covers, I purchased a "Mustang" cover from Walmart for $20.  I looks like the Dowco cover....it has the heat resistant material at the bottom, elastic and adjustable ties for securing the cover.  It is also vented to prevent condensation.  The extra large size is made for big cruisers with a windshield and saddle bags.  This cover fit perfectly over my 1800 with saddle bags and a large backpack bungeed to the backrest of the passenger pillion during a camping trip I made some months back.

A number of other riders in our group had purchased the same cover and were very pleased with it.  On topic:  it did not compress any levers or bind the mirrors.  It also comes with a very compact storage bag and is easy to stow away.  Highly recommended.

Yeah, if you keep one pulled down tight long enough...it will seep off. Whether it should or not...well, that's another question. If the clutch hydraulics hadn't "leaked off", the clutch springs would have stayed compressed, weakening them. I've thought about going ahead and replacing the seals, but since it takes days compressed to leak off, I won't do it at least until next time I replace the brake fluid. I bled it this time till all new fluid came out. It had been about two years since it was last replaced. It was time.
