Cleaning & refinishing the inside of a fuel tank??????
« on: June 05, 2007, 06:44:38 PM »

I want to clean the inside of a mini bike gas tank.

What's the most sensible way?

What do you coat the interior with after it's cleaned?

I was thinking of putting some plastic beads in the tank and then strap the tank to a paint shaker for a while.

opinions vary

I take it that it is a metal tank and you probably have a rust problem? :o
I used a wire brush and a long drill bit to get the majority of big flakes out. ???
Then there is a kit for about $50 at your local motorcycle dealer I mean stealer that
is an acid wash possibly type stuff that you put in the tank then who knows what happens
then you empty it and put a sealer in.
If my meomery serves me right there were 2 big bottles and a small one.
I was going to do it to my dirt bikes, but just decided to sell them.
 :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

found a couple of web sites for you
$75.00 http://www.coolretrobikes.com/hondatanks.htm
$32.00 http://www.kbs-coatings.com/KBS-Cycle-Tank-Sealer-Kit-P89C38.aspx
$35.75 http://www.rags2riches-por15.com/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=CTRK&Category_Code=Kits

I think the best one I have heard about is KREEM, but then again KBS says they are better than KREEM
$31.99 http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/item.aspx?style=2188&department=637&division=6

and if you like ebay

We used a drill with a long extension and round wire brush from a welding supply place.  Put a little acetone in there to help... or you might be able to use some of that old weller 107, I think I got some left...  Then use the interior coating of your choice....  I also read that you could "Take them to a radiator repair shop and have them "dip" the tanks. Should only be a few dollars per tank. That will take care of the rust. Then use the sealer of your choice."  This will make the tank ready for paint on the outside as well...  The kits are supposed to be good if you follow the directions exactly...  Hope this helps...

Just take it to a radiator repair place and have em vat it for ya. Prolly $10 and it's quick and easy. They can tell ya what to coat it with or do it for ya.

I appreciate the responses. My searches were coming up with stupid stuf. Probably my impatience.
It is a metal tank and I actually haven't looked inside yet. But, it's 30 years old and went from road hard to hardly ridden. Has always had gas in it, not necessarilly full.

It may be fine. Wishful thinking. But since I have a new petcock and carb coming I figured I owe it to myself to make sure it's clean.

I really don't want to dip it because the tank is in pretty good shape on the outside. It has a dent but the paint is good. I didn't realise it but since I have been messing with it the dang thing is a classic. I never realised that there was a whole culture out there that worships these little things. Complete with chrome swingarms and racing cams.  ::)

All I know is this little thing put lots of smiles and bruises on lots of little boys and girls and it's fixing to educate another generation.  O0

Thanks

Dusty,
Got the same thing going here on a Honda XL 350. I put some bolts and nuts in it and shook it out then was going to pull the strainer on the pet cock and put a clear inline filter on it untill it start running clean.
I am sure dipping it and coating it would be better. This bike has set up for almost 20 years with an empty tank. Will see what happens.

For those of you fixing up these older bikes, I just got a heads up on a dealer in Longview,TX ( oldhonda.com ) which when the site opens it's First Kick Motorcycles.

I was told that this fellow never delivers. Takes your money and that's it. He has a beautiful web page but I was told he has NOTHING. He has an 04 Dream listed. I may be mistaken but I don't think the dream was in production in 04.

I have not delt with him myself, but I trust the person that told me about him.
