wet legs....fork legs
« on: May 09, 2007, 10:58:20 AM »

well, just a little bit. my fork legs were showing the travel marks today when i took the X out (first time in a LONG time).  Problem is, I'm about to sell it. Should I knock off a couple hundred bucks, or take the front end off again and have the work done. I'm pretty sure those damp legs mean my fork seals are shot. 18000 miles, might be, but i'm hoping it's just the dust caps (that are cracking).

The dust seal simply keeps things out (for the most part)......if you have indications of oil on the slider, then the oil seal is at fault.  The fact that the bike set up for a while can contribute to this and may possibly 'heal' if you ride it for a while.   (then again, you may just need new seals).

Mine set up for a while due to a foot surgery, twice!, and the right side began to 'weep' a little oil after a half hour or more ride.  I have ridden the bike for a few weeks and the weeping seems to have stopped.  In any case, I am not going to replace the seals until it becomes more of an issue.

Try riding it around a bit.......the seals may 'reseat', if you are lucky.

Well, poopybutt.   It has become more of an issue.....the right fork oil seal is now officially leaking.  Made a 1/2 hr. run today and when I got back there was oil down the slider and some had even slung off on the wheel.

Is there anyone in the northeast Texas area that would be willing to assist in doing an oil seal change?  Robbdogg put the good words on me about what will need to be replaced.

Anyway, before I turn this over to the "stealer", I was hoping some experienced person might volunteer to lend a hand.  I have a shop, lift and most all the tools needed.  (I don't have a fork oil seal driver, but, have seen how it can be done with some pvc pipe).

Thanks to any responders..................

I wonder what's so great about it, or if I could use anything that was that thickness.

and does it work on conventional (1300) forks? I'm gonna try it either way.

I believe it is just the thickness with the firmness to get in there. it should work on any fork seals it is essentially just cleaning the "seal" of the actual seal....

I broke down and going for the 'high dollar' rebuild.  I will be requesting all of my 'used' parts so that I can be reasonably assured that they didn't just run some 35mm film under the seal,  ;D

I think it might have worked. nothing looked cracked at all (except the dust seals). I think now it's just weeping off the puddle that came out when i ran the film in there.
