Progressive Springs
« on: May 06, 2006, 11:26:45 AM »

Just received the progressive fork springs for my bike. Price on HDL was great. Just not sure if I am ready to tackle putting them on myself. Guess I don't have much confidence in my skills and would hate to screw something up and end breaking down in the middle of nowhere. Anyone have any advise on installing them, or anyone near Palestine/Tyler area that would be able and willing to assist. I'd bring to it your location if you could.

probably farther then you want to go, but I'd take it to Tapper (north dallas).   you could arrange a time/date and ride over with springs in a backpack or something.  Then ride home with new springs.

DITTO that!!

If you HAVE the mechanical skills, but, don't have the correct tool, it can be very difficult.(3-4 handed job) I also suggest taking it to Tapper. He did mine and by all the empty spring boxes in his garage, I can tell you, he's done them more than several times.

If that doesn't convience you.....you'll be working with aluminum, to aluminum, with fine threads! Nuf said?

Send him a PM. :)

I've sent Tapper an e-mail, but really hated to bother him. He is also so busy. Besides the BBT is just around the corner and I figure he will be going there.
If I don't get them changed until after my trip I don't thnk it's a big deal, just thought I'd try to get them on sooner. The local shop said they would do them, but they are expensive.  :(

The dealer will do it the hardway, and charge for the labor of doing it the hardway.  I'd just wait until after BBT and Tapper has a little time.

If not, maybe print out the howto http://bareasschoppers.com/forksprings/  for the dealer so that they understand that there's a shortcut used on hundreds of vtx's.

I'd help ya out but I'm another 45 minutes further than Tapper.  Springs only take about 30 minutes.

Appreciate all the help. Think I'll wait until after the BBT or until after I return from my trip.

BTW how do you like the springs?

I weighed 300+ pounds when I got my VTX.  The first time I got her out on the open road, I was amazed at the torque.  But I became aware of how much slop was in the suspension. Under hard acceleration, the rear end just sunk. Not to mention uneven highways made her go down the road with a gentle sway and up and down motion.  Felt like a 10 year old cadillac.  I put progressives front/rear and it's quite firm now and very well behaved for a heavy bike.

The stock bike is fine for a light/middle weight solo rider who isn't going to push the bike too much.

2 up, heavy solo rider, aggressive rider will appreciate the progressives up front. (rear as well, but front is more dramatic)

I wonder if Tapper wouldn't mind making some money installing them @ BBTIII?

Tapper installed mine. They make a world of difference, just like Eli said. Do you ever feel like you have a little front wheel hop, when your leaning into curves? They'll fix it. Do your teeth chatter when you ride over a washboard spot in the road? They'll help smooth it out.
