Finally got to ride the 3's
« on: December 07, 2006, 10:25:28 AM »

After no less than 3 failed attempts to get out there, we finally made it last weekend. We spent two night in Bandera and rode out and did the 3's on Saturday... All I can say is "wow". The elevation changes the turns and views were all as billed and then some... Must have saw at least 200 deer on 335 and various other critters including camels, kangaroos and some other animals that I couldn't begin to name on 336. Great trip and I can't wait to do it again. Now I know why everyone talks it up. The Goldwing was a carving dream. I would love to do that trip on a sportbike...

They are really beautiful roads, aren't they?  My favorite place to go.  Bandera's a cool little town, too, huh???!!!  Next time, ride them the other direction. 3 completely different roads!   ;)

Did you ride 16 up to Kerrville???  Those switchbacks make you forget you're in Texas.

Hey did you guys get to stop in that bike museum ?  If I remember correctly - it's where 337 splits and you have to make a hitch over to get back on it.

Least I think it's 337.  Any way mostly Brittish bikes but still kind of a cool stop.

Here is the link to the Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in Vanderpool.  It is a must see.  Try the burgers at the cafe inside but don't arrive late; it closes at 3.

Didn't get to make the bike museum but that's definitely on my list. We were kinda pressed for time and wanted to finish in the daylight since it was gettin pretty cold as the sun went down. The route we tool was 335 out of Leakey across all the cattle guards and came down 336 back to Leakey at the recomendation of the guy at the motorcycle barn there at Leakey. He basically said the same thing about 2 different trips dependent on which way you went. I have been south from kerrville to Bandera before but came in from the other direction this time.. (On that trip it came a flood and we had to turn around and head back to Fredricksburg) I have to say that's the best ride I have taken in my life and I am drooling at the prospect of doing it again!!! God what I wouldn't give to ride that trip as often as I want. Bought Barbie and myself a bunch of leathers at Leakey for a really good price....nice stuff too. Made the ride much more comfortable...

I know just where you are coming from.  I finally had the opprtunity to do this ride Thanksgiving weekend.  I am still overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the scenery and salivating at the thought of riding it again!

If you get a chance - take some time and get to know the currator at the museum - he's an interesting old guy.

We were eating further down the road so I didn't get to try the burgers - will have to do that next time.
