I was just reading in the Texas Police News that Austin is dumping their last 21 Harleys. In 2002 they bought 3 BMWs with ABS to try out. They found them to be better handling and safer motorcycles, and the past two years they have been changing to BMW at 20 bikes per year. Their motorcycle fleet numbers 72. They stated that HD did not offer ABS on the police bikes until 2005; too slow for Austin. In 2005 they had 15 motor officer collisions; 12 of those were HDs. This year they had six; 4 of them were HDs. They are convinced that the ABS is the primary reason for the lower incidence of collisions on the BMWs. This is not a Harley slam; I'm just putting it out here for general information. Austin says they are paying $1,000 to $2,000 more for the Beemers than the HDs.
