Flat rear tire - need to borrow a jack in the austin area
« on: November 28, 2006, 05:50:20 PM »

Hey VTXers,

I haven't been around as much as I would like. Mostly because of work, the new house, and lately a flat tire I was too cheap too take in to get changed and too broke to have it done for me. Luckily it is a 1300S, so the tires are tubed.

Anyway I am going to tackle the job this week (if the rain holds off - no garage). The VTX Tech page suggests using a second jack under the rear wheel to make it easier. Does anyone in the Austin area have a motorcycle jack I can borrow or suggestions to make this easier?

Thanks, Brent

You don't have to have a second jack, it just makes it easier and it's not that tough to begin with.

I  would put the jack under the bike and jack it up just enough so it's stable, take everything lose, jack it up until the back tire is just barely touching, pull the wheel out of the final drive, then jack the bike on up clearing the wheel as the bike goes up. Roll the wheel out.

While you can, go ahead and check your bearings, and put some fresh grease in there.

I've have never done any of this but I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.  :D

If I lived close, I'd bring my jack to ya.  O0

Do you have a service manual?

O0, Hey Brent, I've got one also, also some tire irons I used to 30 years ago when I rode tubes.. Let us know, I live 5 miles east of IH 35 on E 290. no problem dropping it off anywhere in town!

Also have an air compressor.
