Mesh pants for men questions
« on: November 12, 2006, 10:42:53 AM »

My son asked me about mesh pants, since I don't own any and haven't shopped for them before not sure what to look for.

Does anyone out there have any they like, dislike or advice on what to look for? Are they warm enough to wear in place of leathers?

Thanks

I've got olympia lined pants. they're pretty warm with the liner in, especially if you wear rain gear on top. you might also try the firstgear HT overpants. they've got some that are solid and some that are perforated. Regular mesh is great if you want to run some thin, warm layers, or if you have a windproof rainsuit that you don't mind putting on when it gets pretty cold. I've used mine with the liners and jeans down into the 50s with no problems. hope that helps.

Hell Sheri,

I was thinking fish net  mesh - but I can't get my wife to wear them on the bike. . . Come to think of it I can't get her to wear them off of the bike. . .

All seriousness aside though.  I have set of Tourmaster jacket and pants with the thinsulate.  Got them at the old Plano Honda (fore they changed their name and location).  I don't wear them much unless it gets down in the low 50's or better.  Hotter than - any way.  They have armor and really nice till you have to go to the bathroom - no fly.  They are water proof too.  First time I wore the jacket was when I first got the bike - 34 degrees but I had to take it to work to show it off.  I was warm and toasty.  I don't think the pants have a removeable liner though.

I don't think the mesh pants are going to be as warm as leather, but they will definately be more versatile. They can be worn in summer with shorts underneath and will keep cool and still offer more protection than denim. Also, with a liner and some layers underneath can be worn in cooler weather. So they can be pretty much worn year 'round in Houston and offer great protection summer, fall, winter, and spring. I don't know about you, but I don't wear leather during a Houston summer, but the mesh is great.  O0

Thanks I'll let him know. It sounds like finding ones that have a removeable liner is the way to go.

The Wing riders here swear by their mesh pants/Depends liner combo... as they put it, "nothing finer than messin' in your mesh!"  :o ;D :D

I don't think Wrangler makes mesh pants, therefore I wouldn't know anything about them.  ;D O0

I've got the First Gear HT Mesh Overpants.  I wore them all summer in total comfort.  On the hottest days I would put shorts on under them, but I wore them every day to work and back over my slacks and didn't get too hot.

Now that it's winter I put the liner in them and they are plenty warm over jeans. Much warmer than my leather chaps.  The chaps are nice but once the leather gets cold, it's cold, and of course they're not full coverage.  Chaps are my weekend 70-80 degree wear.  Colder or warmer I'm in the mesh w/wo liner.

The only thing I don't like about the HT's is the knee armor. The new version might be better, but mine turn inside. On a cruiser the armor pretty much useless in a crash because it doesn't protect the outside of the knee at all.  On a sports bike it might be different considering the difference in position.

Sherri,
I got a pair on PolarEdge snowbaord pants from Academy last year.  Did great all winter riding to work almost every day.  On the really cold days I wore long johns underneath.  Did great, didn't ride 3 days that I remember cause of rain on 2 days and having to carry a casserole for Xmas dinner at work on the other.  No regrets yet.  No protection, but I don't plan on going down.  To put it in perspective, I'm fightin lung cancer, ya think I'm afraid of that?  LOL  Still got alot of miles left on the X before I go out........  and get a WINGER.
