Last weekend in Kerrville
« on: October 11, 2006, 09:23:17 AM »

We went to Kerville this past weekend to enjoy some of the excellent
roads in the area. We decided to ride over and hit the three sisters
around Leakey. We took Hwy 39 out of Kerrville and just west of Hunt
we met a rider coming towards us motioning for us to slow down. We
weren't going that fast, but I slowed down expecting an officer to
be running radar around the next bend. Nothing could have prepared
me for what we came upon. A rider and his passenger on their '05 Victory Kingpin
had gone into a corner too hot and left the road. They were thrown
into dry creekbed full of boulders. The driver was killed instantly
and other riders in his group had put a jacket over his body and a
cap over his brains (no, they weren't in the same place). They were
tending to the woman as best they could as an ambulance was quite
far away. I still can't get the gruesome sight out of my mind. We
took care of traffic control as it was in a curvy section and then
went on after the ambulance and police arrived to take over.
The woman was careflighted to San Antonio in critical condition,
she has since been upgraded to guarded and then stable condition.
The driver, Gary Smith is from Azle, and the woman, Carolyn Farmer, is from Ft. Worth.

It's Wednesday and every time I close my eyes, I still see his mangled body.

All I want to say is that I NEVER want to have
to see this happen to any of you. Please, be careful and take
whatever precautions you can to protect yourself.

Yeah, I was talking to a local. He said they used to have about 3 fatalities a year on bikes and now it was more like three a month.

I too wondered whether the passenger had anything to do with it. While the corner didn't have a speed marking close, it had huge signs indicating a sharp turn, and their friends all went through okay before them. Perhaps she was whispering in his ear and distracted him, or maybe she shifted her weight an a most inopportune time. You never know, he may have just been going way too fast.

What a terrible thing to happen.  I rode the sisters last week and while it is a great ride, things can go wrong in a fraction of a second.  I hope the rider will recover.

Not sure it would have helped in this case, but everyone should wear a helmet if you
have one person in this world that would miss you.  :-\

I talked to Ms. Farmer's son today and she has improved enough to move to the stepdown ICU. Besides the head trauma, she broke her ankle, shoulder and back. The son didn't indicate any paralysis and I didn't think to ask. Currently they're trying to get her to a rehab unit in the Ft. Worth are since that is where she is from. Continued prayers are welcome.
