QUESTION ABOUT REGISTRATION OF A TRAVEL TRAILER
« on: April 11, 2017, 08:30:25 AM »

Hello folks,

I'm in the market for a travel trailer and I found one at ta dealer in New Mexico (Las Cruses).  Sales man said that I can have it register in New Mexico as a non resident.  If I do this, it will save me over $1k in Taxes non to mention that it will also save me $$ in registration cost in the future.  As per the sales man, the New mexico law does not require a state inspection.  They will simply mail me a bill, and once is paid I  will get a renewed tag.  Other than having a New Mexico plate I don't see negative about that.  He told me the code for the law and a few other things regarding it but I was not able to write it all down.

I am aware that just because New Mexico say they will do that, it does not mean that I can actually do it since I live in Texas.  He said this inly applies to recreational vehicles/travel trailers.   Is anyone familiar with this type of law that can direct me on the right path?   I had searched the Net but I'm yet to find a clear answer.  I was prepared to pay the Taxes on the camper when I register it here in Texas but if I can legally save $1K   that would be great.

so my question is, Can I buy a camper and have it register in the State of New Mexico while I live in the state of texas and I am a Texas resident.

Will Texas honor that New Mexico Law?

Don't waste your time.  My first RV purchase back in 2011 was from a dealer in Las Cruces and it was an absolute headache getting the title work here.  With that said you still have to register it here.

You still have to pay taxes here once you register.  You don't pay taxes there because you are out of state.  Basically you don't pay double taxes but Texas will still collect tax on the assumed value of your unit.

Trailers require registration and for registrations they require inspections........from Texas.

Honestly Gabe, it's not worth the time to go out there and bring it back and then wasted time dealing with the tax assessor's office and DMV of each state.

I know you can find something here of equal value and not waste so much of your time.

I know a guy, he'll send you a check for the shipping but it will be too much so you can just send him the difference.

Our current camper I purchased from a place in Chicago, I didn't have any issues getting the registration done and I saved almost 4K getting the camper out of state.

I didn't pay taxes to IL, I paid them here in TX.

Perhaps I didn't ask my question clearly/stated what I was told correctly.

I can buy a camper in New Mexico and register it there, their law (as per the sales man) allow out of state residents to register travel trailers there and pay the taxes there.  If I can do this, I will not register the camper in TX.

The particular camper I'm looking at will cost me $20273.00  from them,   If I buy that same camper here in Houston, it will cost me $27866.00  both prices include TTL.

to be fair the camper in NM is used but they are both the same year (2016) and  model and have the same potions.

Interesting.  I guess since I'm only used to TX and their have to get an inspection to renew registration it's safe to assume NM doesn't require that?

Gabe, check with Fun Town.  But DO NOT deal with the used RV lot they have in Cleburne!!!!! (Waco's cool, and a whole lot closer).  You may be pleasantly surprised.  And the fuel costs involved with picking up the unit in New Mexico would be significant.  And if your unit has a GVWR of 4500 lbs. or less (I have no idea what you are looking at), no inspection is required in Texas.  Also, insuring a RV registered in another state could be a complicated process with many carriers.

Thanks Jim...  I'm looking a Roo 233s  or a Rockwood 2509S     even with the cost of the trip, I'm likely to save $3-4K
based on the prices I been given.  I'm looking at a 2509s this weekend from Fun town Houston.  My plan is to offer them what it would cost me to go get one from Chicago. (Camper cost+trip cost+TTL).  I figure if I can save me 3-4 days of driving that's a plus.  If they don't take my offer, I will be making a drive to Obama land to get me a new camper.

Alejandro, I purchased a camper from a dealer in Chicago almost 3 years ago.  It was a very easy process.  I didn't have to go to a weight station to get the paperwork.  Unless the law change since then, it will be a very simple process to get the camper register in Texas.  I only asked about registering in NW because of the cost savings.

in 2011 I bought my first camper from NM.  It was slightly over 3000 lbs and I remember they telling me I had to get it weighed.

I will post what I end up doing, my current camper weights 4400 and I didn't need to have it weight.  Just inspected.
