http://montgomerycountypolicereporter.com/motorcycle-fatal-crash-update/ My wife and I were at Drifters Saturday and left right before this accident happened. If you have been to Drifters on FM149 you probably know where that church is a few miles south. This group passed us heading North and just a few minutes later the rear rider would be fighting for his life but only for a few minutes. He was passing the two middle bikes on the left and broadsided the lead bike as they were turning into Drifters. I don't know whether he was trying to stop or just thought he was going to pass the three bikes in front of him but it ended up in a fatality (his own) and two others going to the hospital. Later we ran into several people who where there and saw the accident happen and the general consensus was that the bike was not slowing down.
An accident much like this happened on a non-sanctioned "Texas Bucket List Ride" where the lead (not me) almost missed a turn so stopped quickly, the third bike went around the second to avoid crashing, lost control and hit the first bike. Luckily there were no fatalities but two bikes were totaled, my friend is ok and back riding again.
As we embark on the riding season and specifically the Bluebonnet Thunder Run, lets make sure to be extra diligent as riders and as ride captains. As a ride leader myself on occasion, I do not know every road that I am going down so sometimes we encounter unexpected route changes so please, if you are following someone pay attention and give plenty of space. There is a lot of beautiful scenery to look at but nothing is worth a helicopter ride. Relax, enjoy and ride your pace, I know that this group will wait for you at any turn or stop if you get too far behind.
I know that this group has ridden together and most if not all are very aware of group riding etiquette so I am probably just preaching to the choir here but wanted to get this out of my system. I am really looking forward to riding with you all. This is definitely my favorite part of the year and one of my favorite places to ride.
