Texas DPS made up this quick reference so you wont have to wade through the Texas transportation codes to see which rules apply to MC's:
http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/msb/txmclaws.htm#Chapter%202

If you want to go in depth into state statute, go to the
Texas transportation codes
http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/statutes/tn.toc.htm
Title 7
TRC §547.324- specific rules for turn signals

Guess I won't be tossing my turn signals!

Mine were tossed long ago.... I had always been under the impression that they were not required in Texas until I read it on the posted site. However having been stopped a few times ....even ticketed once(for speeding) and never having it brought to my attention by any of the officers involved, I'm not about to go to the trouble of adding new one's...Thanks for the info though... ;D ;D

Actually, I was going to look it up at work today, but I forgot :-[. I had a "question" about it too. The Transportation Code is so heavy it would qualify as a crew-served weapon; when in doubt look it up. I'll let you know tomorrow.

Hey John, I forgot to look it up -- maybe tomorrow? And yes, Marigold and I will be there.

Well,  I looked up Snake's 547.324 and it does indeed require all motor vehicles (which includes motorcycles) to display turn signals.  Then I looked at 547.801, which specifically refers to motorcycles and motor-driven cycles.  It lists headlights, stoplamps, reflectors, a taillamp, and license plate illumination.  But nowhere does it mention turn signals. ?  ???
545.106 talks about using hand signals or lighting signal lamps to stop or turn, and what vehicles are exempt from signal lamps.
This is kind of like requiring windshield wipers, but not windshields (it's in there.).  I don't work traffic, so this stuff is like way on the back burner.  I'll do speeding and running stop signs, but this is too far from main stream.  Even if I had a traffic code in front of me I wouldn't write a ticket for no turn signal equipment.

I'm going to call DPS tomorrow and talk to an expert.  They are the ones who enforce this on a regular basis and take it to court most often.  The city officers are too busy eating doughnuts and abusing folks rights. ;D

Yeah Roller, I also saw in the state statutes where it says at 547.324 yes, they're needed, and 547.801 doesn't mention them. Then I look at The DPS Motorcycle Laws, where they quote the 324 law that says yes, they're needed, and they say, yes, they are required. Check with DPS and mention the 801 statute and see what they say. I would hope they're not required. I'd also bet if a cop (talkin' about the odd bad cop here, Jim, not a good one) wanted to pull you over for whatever reason, that would be his call if you didn't have any. OF COURSE,... I don't carry anything illegal anymore :-[ so I guess it wouldn't matter anymore other than the inconvenience. My mind still works on the "don't give 'em any reason to pull you over" principal, even though I'm "clean" all the time. Old habits are hard to break. Take off those turnsignals! Women, throw off those bra's, panti..... oooppps, better get off the soapbox! :)

I just talked to our traffic div. and DPS.  Both gave the same answer. They said that if your motorcycle came from the manufacturer with turn signals, then they are required.  If it didn't come from the manufacturer that way, like alot didn't back in the day, then they aren't required.   Easy sleezy.

Looks like it's all covered now. I did look up the laws today. While motorcycles are not required to have turn signals in the motorcycle section, they are in the general section. You will pass inspection without them, but technically they are required. So many laws in so many different sections of so many different books......................... ::)
