Advice on a VTX with high mileage on it.
« on: September 24, 2014, 12:00:33 PM »

I am looking at a 2004 VTX1800N with 80k miles on it. Kelly Blue book retail is $5610.00. So the price seems right for $3000. Is this to many miles? I believe these bikes with reasonable care are good for a lot more miles, maybe even up to 200k. I own a 2003 VTX1800 Retro with 15k on it, but I do like the looks of the Neo model. I might ride the Neo awhile then decide which one to keep, or hell I might keep both.

Thanks in advance.

Many just on our board have bikes over 100K. Most all have been strongly dependable, even up through the miles. 3000 sounds good for a 04, 80K not excessive for a 04. Check it out anjd jump if you like it.

Agree but I would use the miles to get the price down a BUNCH more.  Of course, that is the negotiator in me.  It's likely that most people don't want something with that many miles on it.....offer $1500 and see if he will come down to $2000.   Heck, I got a 2006 Retro Loaded up with 4200 miles on it for $6000, use the Priceline Negotiator!!

Thanks Guys,
I will negotiate with the guy on the Neo and see how far he comes down, never know and want hurt to try. Even if I can only get him to knock off 500 that would still be a good deal but for 1500 yeah baby. lol He has had this ad up on Graigslist for well over two weeks now.

80,000, that Buck Rogers just getting warmed up!! I'm a low mileage with only 73,000 (02 C model) and it's as strong and dependable today as it was with 1,500 miles. Brock just posted his odometer at 100,000 and Hobo has 120,000 and there's plenty more out there with this kinda mileage. I do change my oil about every 5000 to 8000 (use Amsoil) and drive past a car wash from time to time. I wouldn't blink an eye on throwing my leg over "Ole Blue" and heading out to Calif. or New York, or anyplace else for that matter, that's how confident I am about the machine. Everybody hollers you need to keep the valves adjusted every 5,000 or so, well mine was done at,......... well it's been 63,000 since, and she's running fine. When I ride, as a few others, I don't have MP3 slamming my eardrums so I listen to what the motor, tires, and the bike in general is telling me. Sorry got kinda off track a little, what I'm trying to say is 80,000 ain't AppleSauce. Hope you get it and enjoy.    :c :c :c

If it looks good, I'd jump on it for that price (or lower).  Pay attention to the underside of the motor, and up around the tops of the cylinder heads, for any leaks.  Other than that, get her home and start the journey heading north of 100K miles.   ;D

Thanks MR VTX.... I have just about talked myself out of it. I really like the looks of the Neo over the Retro. But my Retro is a good bike and I have had it for years now. Decisions, decisions. lol
I could drop 3000 and wait and try and sale mine, but right now money is money and it just goes so far. But still tempted.
