1800c - no rear braking
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:59:56 PM »

:ohwow: Not sure how or why, but my 2003 1800c has little to no rear braking.

- front brakes work fine.
- have speed bleeders, so loosen alittle and place a hose over it, all fluid coming out - no air.
- removed rear bake calipers, brake shoes are great (replace under 2k ago, typically good for 25k).
- cleaned everything up and dont see anything wrong/bent/or broke.
- replaced the pads back and stomped on the brake peds a few times, and it seems that only one of the piston is moving, not both. Moved it back into open position and stomp again a few times, thus yet again only the one is moving...did this a few more time and the second one (the one farest away from the inlet line) is moving but just barely.

I'm guessing that the pistons are stuck and they need to be removed and replaced or their rings do...

So GURUs of the MOTORBIKE, GODs of the TWO-WHEEL, the SPIRIT of  :notworthy:  ..... am I right? or should I check something else? How can this be done without the STEALERS? can the calipers just be brought in? What tools are needed to check the piston rings?

I heard there might be  Tech session in Dallas... WHEN? WHERE?  if not, I can ship or bring calibers to helper.
thanks, kded4009

forgot to mention...
I have had rear braking for awhile now, up till the last few days. The same bike setup and braking setup was working just fine, and no wrecks or replacements of any sorts was added.

I have spieglers braided cables, and I did check both reservoirs (front and back) and they both are filled.
thanks,

You may have some trash in the caliper. If your brake fluid hasn't been changed lately flush the system, and disassemble & clean the caliper.

does anyone know of a way to remove the pistons from the calipers? and then replace the piston rings back into the calipers? is there a tool or process that can be done? thanks.

Use an air blower. Go slow and easy. Let the good piston come out about halfway then put a c- clamp to hold it in place  and let the pressure push the other one out. Use a glove or heavy rag to hold the pistons as they slide out. Clean and polish the caliper replace the o ring and clean or replace the bad piston.

well that was good advise, however, I'm not too good that mechanically :ohwow:...so I broke it down and dropped it off with the stealers this weekend...waiting on it back. In the meantime, I was able to find a replacement caliper, but it doesn't match (color nor size) with my other ones on the bike. I believe with this "TEST" one, everything feels and looks to be okay (brake line, fluids, brake pedal action) and that it is definitely junk in the caliper that is not allowing to brake the bike. Anyways thanks. :notworthy:

Don't forget that it is a LINKED system.  I have an '03, bleed the left front, then the right front and then the rear.  Mine kept doing the same after some brake work.  I replaced all the rear seals and still did not work.   I finally got all the air out after following by the 'Book' and the 1,2,3 process.

well that was it, the brake caliper pistons needed to be broke down and then seals replaced...$50 cost from the stealers... not bad. Thanks everyone for help and suggestions.
