 Look down the road, not down at the road.
Pay day on Friday, Ride day on Saturday.

Welcome to the board.  Biggest rookie mistake is riding the bike on the road without taking the MSF course.  I'm sure you've done it, but if you haven't they offer some invaluable advice and life saving techniques.  And always remember that the best ride you'll ever have is the one that lets you get back home to ride another day. 

My advice that has proven itself more than once:

NEVER trust that some can see you when they are coming out of a side street or driveway
Green does not mean GO.  Look both ways and make sure no car is coming, if clear and sure all are stopping, then proceed
Keep your distance
Be seen.  When in high traffic or a car behind you, again NEVER assume they see you.  Get a brake light flash module or learn to pump your brake lever safely to flash your brake light.

ALWAYS BE THINKING! Never expect the other guy to do what he's supposed to do, sooner or later , he won't. Anticipate what might happen and be prepared for it. Ride at the flow of traffic, riding slow in traffic is not neccessarily riding safer. It's not the speed, it's the difference in speed( closing rate, theirs or yours) Think ahead and try to always have an escape route.

If you have some patient friends that ride, go take a long ride with them into the Texas Hill Country, New Mexico, Colorado or Arkansas.  You will learn more on that trip about the handling of your bike than you could ever get from any amount of local riding.

Yeah, People hurry. It's because they don't ride and don't know that the destination is the seat.
