Bull Shoals, Arkansas. Camp at White River State Park. You won't regret it, and you will want to go back. Lots of roads and scenery. 1 HR from Branson, Missouri, 1.5hrs from Springfield(Bass Pro Shop, neat place to go). You can take several routes, hwy 7 is beautiful, but don't get in a hurry. Queen Willemena, eureka springs, lots of beautiful places. But we love White River SP.

We went through Arkansas a few years ago, Talimena byway is pretty awesome, (note: get gas before getting on that road: don't ask).

Ozark mountains, pig trail, several great state parks, It was a great week.

My recommendation is Arkansas too.
In fact, I'm headed there next week for a little R&R.

My initial plans changed, but I'm still trying to put some things together.

If you mean the ridgetop highway between Mena, AR and Talihina, OK...you are correct.  It is awesome.  And yes, get gas in Mena or Talihina first.
On the map, it is Hwy 88 on the AR side and Hwy 1 on the OK side.
I heard that the Queen Wilhelmina State Park is closed for a while for a remodel.  Bummer.  I stayed a night there last year.  The lodge was not too shabby.

Did it have anything to do with the stuffed brown bear in the lobby?
If so, I heard the story from the front desk lady.

Dan I would say that knowing a couple of the participants involved here, I believe and venture to say there's a very strong possibility the lady at the desk was talking about them.

If it is going to stay Hot & Humid...I would be going to Angel Fire/Red River, NM and then into a few areas Colorado of course not staying in all of them but try to ride a few (Pagosa Springs, Durango, Ouray, Creede, Lake City, Gunnison, Aspen, Breckenridge, Winter Park, Estes Park) and that is just to name a few of the places that I like.  I would probably try to take a rod and fish some areas.  Just W of Creede you can hit a back road that has been hard packed/good and it  goes to the Rio Grande Reservoir where the Rio Grande starts.  Take 149 out of South Fork, CO thru Creede, you turn-off onto Co Rd. 520 then after traveling past the two small lakes you will turn left onto 18.  This road leads you back to the Reservoir and camping/RV areas.  Just be prepared for any weather in this area of Colorado.  One year it was raining/ snowing/sleeting on a couple of days so if you go, be like a Boys Scout.
