What's the best brand & size of tire ?
« on: August 29, 2006, 12:48:19 PM »

I have an 1800 VTX Retro with spoke wheels stock Dunlop's
A lot of the folks swear by the Avon Venoms but never say what size they are replacing the stock Dunlop's with ??
My speedometer is about 3 to 4 mph fast so if I go with a slightly larger tire on the rear I think this will help to correct this .

In the world of bicycling tires, Vittoria's Secret is tops.

Avon Venoms. This is my first set so mileage life I can't say how long they will last but the way they handle on dry or wet is great.

I'm partial to AVONS or Metz. I had some Bridgstones that seemed pretty sticky too, but due to some Rita debris, I lost them both before I had very many miles on them. I plan to try the Bridgestone Elite 3's the next time I buy tires. I have heard some good about them and no bad as of yet.

I thought Dunlop made this tire?   Maybe I'm offbase..

You are exactly right. My mistake.

I retract my statement. I will try Bridgstones again but no more Dunlaps for me.

I have Metzelers on my bike and they work great, (going on my second set)they are a little softer than the Avon's.  I know some guys have Avon tires and they say they would not buy anything else.  I personally like the tread pattern of the Metzeler better.  Either way you go, you will get a better tire than the stock tire.  Dunlop makes great tires ( I have them on my Sport Bike) but somehow they do not work that well on the VTX is like Honda got the cheapest tires they could find and mounted them on the bike to keep the cost low.

I have the Dunlop Elite 3’s on my 03 1800 Retro and have over 10K on them with very little cupping noticed. They ride good and corner very well, a little tight on the fenders getting them in but other than that they are great.

Not to change the subject  -  Can someone describe "cupping".  I've seen that mentioned a number of times and I would like to be able to look for it, if I know what it is! ???
