stator / charging
« on: August 08, 2011, 06:28:27 PM »

I learned something on Friday.  My VTX will not run on a dead battery.  Apparently all or most motorcycles are this way.  I figured they were like a car....once running, the stator would generate enough power to keep it running.  Not so in my case.
I have known the battery was weak, and I was procrastinating on replacing it and getting a tender.  Hard lesson learned.  I pulled the clutch to roll into a stop sign, and she died.  Tried to restart and heard the rapid clicking that is indicative of a dead batt.  Did I mention it was 105* here on Friday?

Anyway, I got a new battery, filled it, charged it, and installed.  All is well.  I figured I ought to check to see if it is charging; hence my question:

How many volts should it read at idle?

I hooked a multi-meter to the batt posts.
12.9V at key on
13.4V to 13.8V at idle (my idle is set to lope a little)
14.7-ish at just above idle and it drops back to the mid-13's above that.

All these readings are without any accessory lighting on.
I assume this is good....correct?
