Questions on ECU
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:39:16 PM »

Have an 07 C model it has what looks like a Jardine Slip on muffler like this  http://www.jardineproducts.com/index.php/cruiser/exhaust-cruiser/slip-on-slashcut-exhaust-chrome.html
It has no fuel management system on it I do get some popping once in awhile. I want to put an open air type air filter on it like this http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RK-3926
would I have to put a fuel manager on the bike or can the ECU make the adjustments??

I basically had the same question a few backs from what others have posted and found on the national board, you don't need a EFI module, as the 1800 ECU will compensate.  I did read that if you unhook the battery, install whatever it is you want and then reconnect the battery it will learn much faster.  DUnno, but it might just be due diligence.  can't hurt anything.

You should be fine just disconnect the battery, do the desmog & new air kit, reconnect and go.  I put on the PCIII to be able to dual map (city speed and Hwy. travel speed); I may take it off since the wife and I now use the Wing for long travel.
I would bet most on here just change what they want (pipes / air box) & roll with it on the 1800.

I changed my mind from getting an open type air cleaner I plan on doing the desmog and just putting a K&N filter in the stock air box. Fuel manager is to much Bling for now.

Johnny...why do you think that Honda claims that the ecu on the FI-1800 will make adjustments...just asking
I have had two different mechanics tell me this, now I am wondering about this myself...

With no way of nowing what is coming out of the pipe it can not adjust anything.
it will change for temp and altitude but that is all.
unless it is a smog bogged Ca bike the it just leans everything out until WOT

The 1800 VTX does not use an O2 sensor in a loop system to determine the A/F ratio and therefore CAN NOT alter the fuel curve due to a change in the air flow as a result of change in pipes, air cleaner, ect...  Some bikes use an O2 sensor the VTX does not.  Bikes that have them can compensate (to a small degree) for small air flow changes but pipes and air cleaner mods generally require a fuel curve altering device like a Power Commander, Bazzaz or a Fuel Nanny to make them run thier best.

I have yet to put a fuel controller on my 1800C, so I when changed the air cleaner and pipes on my bike, it ran much better at mid and WOT points, but that was because the OEM fuel curve is very fat (rich) at those points.  Adding the extra air helped to make more power at those points , but the OEM fuel curve is also very lean at idle and part throttle settings, so at idle and part throttle openings the extra air hurts it at those throttle points.
