EPA approves 15% ethanol in gasoline
« on: October 14, 2010, 07:16:04 PM »

According to what the news was saying on cars and trucks after 2007 it will not effect them and it includes bikes as well I would imagine. How will it effect older cars and bikes cause them to run hotter? So what will people have to do with older bikes and cars hunt and search for stations that carry the gas with the 10% ethanol sounds like a big mess to me but leave it to the govt. to come up with what is best for us.

I have been told you can convert an older car to "Flex Fuel" for about $200.00. I don't know about bikes.
Ethanol actually produces more torque and horsepower than unleaded gas. That is why ethanol is used in dragsters.

unless the proper elastomers in vehicle are correct the additional ethanol will deteriorate the the elastomers in the fuel system. that is why the statement after 2007 when manufactures began building cars for flex fuel e85 they changed the elastomers. As for making more power and torque how is that possible if the BTU content of ethanol is approx 30% lower than gasoline. ask anyone who has run e85 what kind of fuel mileage they got.

A dealer I know told me that the E-85 does produce more power once the vehicle's computer readjusts to it, but that the mileage sucks. When you switch back to gasoline the computer needs to readjust again. I'm assuming he knows what he's talking about. He also told me that on the new vehicles the only difference between the flex-fuel version and the standard version is that the flex-fuel vehicles have lined fuel tanks and higher-grade fuel lines and fittings. He said the engines are the same.

Also what they said the stations can or cannot carry it and the pumps will be labeled so you would have to look for the right station which on a long road trip could be a problem. As far as bikes go guess we would have to upgrade the fuel lines and maybe a lined tank........our EPA just trying to help...not

if the BTU content of ethanol is 56,800 but's per gal and the btu content of gasoline is 76,100 btu's per gallon where does the extra power come from? how can inputting less yield more? Please explain the physics of this to me.
