Vibration
« on: May 06, 2010, 08:03:30 PM »

I'm experiencing pretty bad vibrations, I think Ive pin pointed it but not for sure. Possible clutch spring?

03 1800c
28,000 miles
Pc III (currently unplugged)
If it was on it from the factory its not now (emissions stuff)
Tires have been eliminated.

If i take off easy I notice it more constant. If I ride it like I stole it you dont notice it as much. Some days i don't even notice it. Riding two up gets pretty bad. It really drives my wife nuts. At times its intermittent it seams, wont do it all the time. Ive been paying closer attention to things like shifting slower and notice the vibration in all gears progressively as you shift higher. Upon getting in 4th its not bad (droning pipes get to me after a while) when you shift to 5th at say 55 to 65 you really get the vibration. When in 5th cruising at 70/75 and twist on it its really bad.

I unplugged the pc III two weeks ago, I was having bag hesitation issues. Like it was starving for fuel, cutting out, dropping an injector, and of course vibration. Everything went away but vibration.

While riding last few days Iv pulled in on the clutch and everything goes away, is it possible a clutch spring is broke causing an imbalance ?

I'm not experiencing any clutch slip, however tonight it seemed like it was slow to hook up in 4th. Buy the time I got home I forgot about it and didn't run it hard again.

Shes a daily rider and enjoy the X, hate to see her sit at home sick.

Any help would be much appreciated

Just a shot in the dark. Check for a fowled plug. Possibly right rear.

Ok I've read your post several times and it sounds as though the vibration get faster and more violent as you increase speed. You ride two up and it's worse. I've thought about different things that would cause the problem and in fact if it does get worse as your speed increases then it would point to tires, which you say you've checked and their ok, so the deduction I've come to is it's in the drive line somewhere (driveshaft to the final drive). If it were a clutch spring or any related part it wouldn't get worse and faster as you up shifted because your clutch and motor run the same RPM. There's something here that sounds more in the drive line area such as drive shaft bearings The 1800 (and 1300) have a u-joint and like you car or truck they will fail as any bearing will so this is a possibility, even though I've not seen or heard of on the VTX before. It's located at the front of the driveshaft at the swing arm at the frame mount as it comes out of the tranny. To check it you'll have to pull the swingarm assembly but it may save your life. I've tried to copy the picture in the manuel ( I have on my computer) but no it want let me. I hope this will help you out and I'd get this checked out real soon before you put on any more miles. If it does come apart it could lock up the rearend and I really don't want to hear or see any more posts about "rider down".

10/4 to Hooter's guess...check out page 14-0 in the Service Manual for a look see at the part he's suggesting.

Plugs are brand new. I forgot about the final and got stuck on the clutch for some reason and now I remember.....

Hooter your probably right, I checked the u joint before xmas, I found alot of slop in it. So i disassembled it all. When i got my hands on the u joint I couldn't believe it, it was as tight as a new one. (glad i didn't order it, spendeeee)I had stuck a prybar where the rubber boot is on the swing arm and it scared me, it was that loose. The shaft seemed to be ok, the spline d part on the final seemed to be a little loose and you could see the metal in the final. Just figured it was normal wear.  I was kinda in a crunch for time and didn't have the doe so I lubed with grease and back together it went.

I picked this bike up a not even a year ago with 19,000 miles on it and have been dealing with it.

Guess i will pray for alot of rain so I can tare it down and really look into it. May be looking for a 1300 final if I do it. Anyone know where to get salvage parts? Also looking for a good tuner with Dino.

Check the flange bearing. A common issue with the 1800's. Do a search of VTXOA and there are alot of flange bearing issues.

I'm on my third set of flange bearings. I've replaced them with the ones from HLD (All Balls was the brand name) and when I pulled my rear wheel the other day to replace the tire, guess what, their rough again. The first time I thought possibly pressed them in wrong and not seated far enough and the next set I froze acouple of days and made sure of the seating. I wish there were some kind of load rating for these bearings and like Tapper said, find a heavier rated bearing from a bearing supplier. I've gotten about 15,000 outa each set. Anybody know of a different bearing?
I talked to a honda dealer about the problem his reply was "you've just been reading someone else's horror stories and that these bearings don't go bad". This set will be bagged up and put in my truck and if I get back around that dealer I'll go in and show him the third set of bearings that never wear out. I never got any vibration although I could hear them a little when driving about 50, pull in the clutch and kill the motor.  Now my main wheel bearings are the orginal and are still as smooth as a baby's B--.   Just my $.02 and experiance.
