I'm not referring to the loping sound...I'm referring to the pinging noise.  Every VTX that I've heard that gets WAY too low to where it sounds like it's just barely running, has a pinging/ting noise like dropping a quarter on metal.

When the idle is lowered to a rediculous level, the metallic pinging sound could be any (or all) mechanical devices in the engine that are being forced back and forth as a result of the engine trying to stop between firing impulses.  It's diffinitley not detonation!  Generally speaking the best idle is the slowest SMOOTHEST idle speed the engine will maintain.  Manual spec on idle is 850 rpm.  When the engine is asked to slow down beyond a point the flywheel weight can not carry enough inertia to drive ALL rotating assemblies smoothly to the next firing impusle, they are slowing down and want to stop.  The next impulse abruptley accelerates the crankshaft and everything else driven off of it.  Things like timing chains become slack and gears bash back and forth due to the lash between them.  Bottom line is.............If you want more lope........get a cam that has more overlap.  Don't be a goofball and wreck your engine in an attempt to sound cool.   :banghead:

Could it be idle?  I noticed now it idles about 1200, before was closer to 850.
Is there any notification of oil pressure.

It IS possible that the pistons/cylinders did not get enough splash lubrication from the sump if you ran the engine at a very low rpm.  I can beleive that damage due to lack of lubrication can occur long before the "idiot" oil light is triggered because it is tied into the oil gallery and gives no indication of weather or not the pistons themselves are getting enough oil due to splash oiling.  They don't call them idiot lights for nothing.  There are reasons for a minimum rpm at idle on an engine. This is one of them.
What did the dealer say why they scraped out??????

Do these machines actually have a decompression mech.?

The 1800 does have a decompression mechanisum.  It's centrifugally operated and holds the exhaust valve slightley open when cranking at about 325 rpm.  The device should be disabled when the bike is normally idling at or near 850 rpm which is the manual spec for idle speed.  As the rpm drops below spec, the device can actuate and makes a rattling noise.  It seems to be a problem on some of the 2002 models.

What did the dealer say why they scraped out??????

The oil was fine.  They actually sent it to honda to be tested.  There was no sludge or build up in the engine nore were there any shards of metal (which I thought was kinda weird given the condition of the piston) They said the wear and tear of the engine was normal for its age.   The dealer had no idea why the pistons were scored so bad. Maybe I should sell it before it happens again.
