Today I was an idiot and I forgot to take out the key out of my bike today. I left it on from 9:00am to 12:30pm (I was going to lunch) of course the battery was drained. So I called HRCA for road side assistance, as always very helpful. The towing company arrives in less than 45min. The guy asks; where is the battery? I of course said under the seat. He tells me I have to take off the seat so he can jump start it. I got pissed, he tells me for liability reasons; he can’t take off the seat. I was glad that I had the correct size “L” wrenches in my tool bag. I got the seat off, he tried to jump start it with his portable jump start kit (or what ever you call it) the thing barley cranked my bike. He had to use his truck to jump start my bike. I put my bike together and road back home and swapped the bike for my wife’s car (my wife had my truck).

Should I be mad with HRCA or the DUMB Cranberries that came over and jump started my bike. Am I exaggerating? Is it true for liability reasons I had to take off the seat of my bike? Any comments is greatly appreciated, and yes, I know, I will be called a dumb Cranberries for leaving the bike on (the bike was not running, just the electrical was on) I already know that you guys like to make fun of people, I do it my self, just let me put my armor on.

I could see their insurance company paying if he burn't up your wiring. That's the area he was sent to work with.

I may be anal, but, I would not let anyone who drives a wrecker touch any thing on my bike he didn't have to.

Sounds like a good reason to go ahead and do the seat mod, too.  Glad you are back up and running.

its the same now for when you take your watch in to walmart or something to change the battery.  unless you bought the watch there, you have to take the back off so they wont be liable if the springs and stuff pop out....

The only thing that I might be upset with is that HRCA didn't tell you on the phone to make sure the battery was exposed, and ready to be jumped.  Other than that, I'll take my own seat off, thank you.   

**As a side note, I only turn off my bike with the key, that avoids these situations.**

I would be *irritated* w/ them for not mentioning having it exposed on the phone but why would I be angry when it was my dumbass mistake that put me in the position of calling them?   

Besides, would you not pop the hood on your car? What's the difference between taking the seat off the bike and popping the hood?  AND, being the type of person I am, in the 45 minutes it took the wrecker to get there, I would have had the seat off anyway, just to have something to do.

The reason he had to use his truck to jump your bike is because you drained your battery completely dead over a three and a half hour period. To start a bike when the battery is COMPLETELY dead requires a lot of amps. Many more amps, in fact, than a jump box has to offer. Removeing your seat? Come on bro, you wanted him to disassemble your bike? You really have no reason at all to be mad.

And just an FYI. When you jump a COMPLETELY dead battery, it is wise to leave the bike connected to the jump source for at least 10-15 minutes to allow both your alternator and the jump alternator recharge the battery some. Removeing the cables too soon can put a severe amp draw on the alternator, and with very often blow the voltage regulator (stator).

Time to do the seat mod. There's not much you can do to the bike without removing the seat anyway.
I think you should be glad the guy showed up and was able to get you going.

Tow truck drivers are not mechanics.  He might do a great job of hauling your bike or vehicle, but not know diddly about wrenching on it.  I give the guy an A for knowing his limits.
