Why I ride motorcycles and sail sailboats.
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:13:01 AM »

So why do I ride a feisty motorcycle or go sailing on a cruising sailboat? For EXACTLY the same reason.

Sounds strange doesn't it? It actually makes sense if you think about it just slightly differently. I USE my truck to carry stuff from here to there or back the other way. I get in, turn the key and head for the grocery store, the hardware store, the gas station or even the liquor store. Sometimes, I haul my bike in the back. Sometimes, I tow my sailboat behind me. But it's always GO, GO, Go with the truck. Go here, go there, go some other place.

But untie the sailboat from the dock or turn the key on the motorcycle and I'm THERE. There's no need to GO somewhere because I've already gone to the place I was looking for. It's called "away". I've gotten away from the job. I've gotten away from my boss who gives poor direction and blames me for not doing a good job. I've gotten away from house remodeling. I've gotten away all the little things that rain on a nice day. Even if I'm riding or sailing with a group, I'm still away. Whichever sport you enjoy, you should know this place. There's no destination because none is needed. There's a place to stop so you can talk to other people who've just visited THEIR away place. The ONLY difference between riding motorcycles and sailing boats is the time it takes to get to the discussion place.

On the bike, it usually only takes an hour or so to get to the place where you talk about what you've done. Usually, we talk over a hamburger basket, or a slice of pizza about what's going on. How long did you ride? Did you see the deer, bluebonnets, etc? On the sailboat, it usually takes all day to get to the discussion place. When we get there, talk happens over an eclectic menu. Someone's grilling steaks, someone's frying fish, and someone's just eating cold sandwiches. The talk though is amazingly similar. How did you get here? Did you see the porpoise, rainbow, etc? But each sport has its zone. It's the place where you have escaped the day to day drudgery and can really enjoy life and living. It's the place you can reach even alone or in a group.

And all I have to do get there is untie a rope or turn a key. But I'm one of the REALLY lucky ones. I've got a companion who helps me visit my away place. She rides with me on her own bike. She sails with me on our boat. And when we stop, we get to talk about our day together, away.

P.S. I thought this up on the way from the house to the apartment while I was away. :bikerider:

Sweet, what boat do you have? I have had a few small sailboats myself. Right now my goal is to get a new one. I love to sail. Here is the one I just looked at recently.

I've actually have two sailboats. A 16' AMF Sunbird and a 21' Lindsey Mitey Mite. Here's a picture of the bigger boat.

The Mac26 is a great boat. For some Texas Bays, shallow draft is the only way to go. Our boat draws 22" of water so when we run aground, we just get out and push.  ;D Look around some for a used Mac. Try the for sale ads on http://www.trailersailer.com/ and http://www.sailingtexas.com/ Prices on these sites are a lot more reasonable than Brand new.

No sh*t, I had a 1980 Sunbird, orange and white. Small world.
I have been looking at both of those sites, and craigslist too.
If I came across an Illusion Mini 12, I would snatch it up as fast as I could.

The year I bought my bike I said to myself earlier that year I need a new hobby. at first Iwas thinking about getting a pilot's license but ennded up getting the motorcyle. I made the right choice espescially since I have had a major shift in income since then. The bike has been paid for since day one and next to nothing fo fillup even when gas skyrockets.

After spending the week working the boat show I was thinking wouldn't it be nice to get a boat.... The guy in the booth next to me leases boats for a year at a time you have an upfront fee of $3000 ($1500 boat show special) then a monthly fee from $185-900 depending on the boat and program you choose. You use he pays slip fees, insurance and maintence, the benifts of ownership without the headaches. You get 3, 6, or 14 usese monthly.... mabye someday. I thought is was pretty cool.  Their websit is http://www.nauticshare.com/nauticshare they also have a sailboat program.

I very much agree with you about the "feeling".  Different than I have ever experienced before.  It is that "away" feeling...distance yourself from the daily trials and headaches.  My oldest son is still trying to convince me almost everyday, that I should not be riding...too dangereous, I will get killed on that big thing!  He just doesn't understand why I love it...it is my "away from it all" time.

Great thoughts, Wayne!
