exhaust stem/bolt
« on: May 15, 2009, 05:15:48 PM »

got my new exhaust in for my 1800! took off old and started putting on new and found out that one of the stems was totally stripped  :( and  it was the stem closest to the engine on the front side. so i tried a few diferent things (to take the stem out) like welding the bolt to the stem, vise grips and wd 40. SOOOOOOO the question is how would i get the stem out to install a new one?

I'm assuming you are referring to the stud. If you have a torch available you might try heat and a good penetrating oil. After the area has cooled and the penetrating oil has soaked in hammer the stud (straight in) and try to break it loose. If vise grips won't work try double-nutting it or spend the bucks for a stud wrench. When you put the new one back in be sure to generously slather it with anti-seize compound. This might be a good time to remove the other three studs and coat them with anti-seize compound also. Good luck!
