Why is my bike so sluggish?
« on: February 21, 2009, 09:02:39 PM »

I admit I have not been taking good care of my bike...  I have put 6k miles on it since August, and have not done any preventive maintenance on it.  I know, some gov't agency should take it from me for my neglect.

Well, it's getting me back for my lack of care.  The last couple days, I've had to use the choke to get it to start in the mornings/afternoon.

I pulled the air filter out to see if it was so dirty it was preventing air flow, but I can't tell.

I have a major paper due on Monday, so I haven't been able to get it to the shop in the last few days for an oil change/diagnosis, but I plan to shortly.  So, do you think it's the air filter, or might it be something worse?

looks dirty to me, or is it shadows from the pic? Is the black stuff on the corner carbon build up? as in fuel mixture to rich.

There aren't any shadows in that pic.  That's the way it actually looks.  Fuel mixture too rich, huh?  Hmmm...  I'll be sure to tell my mechanic to check that.  Thanks!

Fuel cleaner?  Is that an additive that cleans the fuel lines, or what?  What exactly does it "clean?"  What effect should you expect from adding fuel cleaner?

The fuel cleaner should clear up any fouling, deposits, or varnish in your fuel system, from the tank to the carburetor.

chevron techron additive is the one that comes highly recommended for the VTX. I put a 1/3 of bottle each oil change. keeps everything nice and clean and runnin' mean.
