Gas Mileage
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:45:09 PM »

I know this has been beat to death ad infinitum. But I'm getting about 33 mpg in the city.
Is this low, high, or in between? I have Cobra Slash cut slip ons and a K&N air filter. Is there something i should be doing?
Maybe go up a grade on gas? 89 octane? Would a fuel processor help? I'm commuting almost daily now so i'd like to squeeze a few more miles out of a tank. I keep tire pressure up to around 40 on both tires and i'm on the Dark Side.
205/60/16.

Oh and on another subject i've forgotten how to post my photos of my ride on here. Would having Flickr.com help?
Its one of those Yahoo things.

One thing that will make you have better gas milage is you putting on a upgraded fuel processor like a power Commander III if you don't have one. With changing the air and exhaust from the factory the factory fuel module does not compute the differnt air and exhaust so gives you so so gas milage. It does help!!  8)

33 city is about par for x's in my area. Octane will not matter, save those ten cents a gallon and  be happy you don't have to buy premium. :o On a brighter note, gas is under 2.00 a gallon here today!

octane isn't a grade, and higher octane isn't "better".  Octane is simply a number that tells you how resistant the fuel is to ignition.  The higher the rating, the harder it is to ignite.  Higher octane is important in high compression engines.  The VTX isn't a high compression engine.  Higher octane fuels actually perform worse than the low stuff in our engine.

addind a power commander will help some with the mileage if (this is important) tuned correctly. if not then fuel mileage could be downright horrible. also remember that if you request a map for "knock your butt off the seat" power, then fuel mileage may suffer as well. tell the tuner what it is you want and you should get it. also, you can have 2 maps done as well. one for city commuting and one for burnin' up your rear tire. BTW, a "map" is the program created for your bikes specific needs and then loaded into the power commander. my recommendation would be to talk with johnny cheese from this board. he know's his sh!t when it comes to the X and power commanders. good luck and ride safe.

The cheapest way to increase your gas mileage is to simply keep your wrist under control.  Nothing knocks your fuel mileage down faster than a rapid twist of the wrist!  Keep your shift under 3krpm, or better yet, 2-2.5krpm, and use a gradual accel.  You will see a significant rise in mileage.

But, where's the fun in that??????   :P

Now that gas is back in the 2 buck range my V&H control my wrist.  O0 I shift at the same 3000 rpm in all the gears when I get on the hiway (that's about all I get to ride) and it sounds better than Eva Longoria looks necked!! O0 HUBBA - HUBBA O0 I used to get about 33 MPH under normal conditions but now, WFO is the way to go!! Don't worry about your mileage, let that be-och sing, that's why you got it. 8) 8) 8)

So far so good. I changed to them just before I went to Colorado and now have almost 7500 miles and seem to be fine. I'm going to jurk them out and look when I do my maintenance here in a couple of weeks. Thanks for checkin

So what about the Cobra FI2000? There are two styles apparently. A "T" connector and one that actually has wires that go under the gas tank. The "T" connector seems the easiest to install. Anybody had any experience with the FI2000 from Cobra?

Thanks

ALL TRUE!!!!!!, GET A GOOD TUNER if you wanna go PCIII. johnnycheese tuned mine,,, dual map,,, (Not a 'power' map and then a 'mileage' map, but a map for each cylinder.)  I get about 35 highway just puttin', low 30's at 80+ mph.
Johnny sez there are about 6 cells in a map that control mileage, and if I needed better mileage to subtract 5 off the current values of those 6 cells.,,,,
If I was getting 15 MPG, I'd go there, but right now, my A/F mix curve is virtually flat, no spikes, and the X runs smooth and S T R O N G ! ! ! ! ! ! !.  {Strong like 'I can see a new clutch in my future/who put helium in my front tire cuz it sure seems light ' kinda strong!}  ;D

I'm leavin' it mapped right where it is!!!!!!!  O0

The Cobra only adds fuel,,, no real way to get 'better mileage' than OEM with a Cobra. The 'R' version for the Cobra (Fi2000r)is true 'plug and play', no splicing or soldering, way easy to install. Other riders Ive spoken with indicate their mileage went down, but they like the way it runs,,,  Improved rideability,,, The OA board seems to favor a 2-0-0 setting, which only richens up the idle. Do NOT quote me, but I believe the factory setting on the Cobra comes out close to 3.5-2-1.

I got the PCIII and had a dual map done by johnny cheese.  It was well worth the money, I thought my bike rode fine but then I had this done and I realized that it ran like crap.  Smoother ride, no more decell pop, mileage went up.  Great results. I rode back from Austin to houston doin about 85 and my low fuel light didn't come on.  My opinion...PCIII with a dual map by johnny cheese is the way to go.
