FORK SEAL LEAK
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:33:00 AM »

My right front fork seal is leaking.  How hard is this to fix?

I'm not a wrench.  Should I have this done, or try it myself?

If I am going to change to the progressive springs, should I do it at the same time, or do you not have to take the forks apart to do it?

Definately change your springs out when you fix your seal leak.

As for fixing the fork seal leak that is a toughy.  With a service manual and someone that has done one before (just for knowledge sake) I would say go for fixing it yourself, just depends on how comfortable you would feel.  On the other hand I've read that the price varies (a lot) at different dealers and if you can find one of those dealers that won't charge you an arm and a leg then I would venture to say let that at it.

Just my opinion.

Since I just did this...

Yes change the fork springs in the process.

If you don't have the fork tool, you will either need to buy it or borrow one.
You'll have to make or buy a seal driver.  I made one but wish I would have bought one.  The homemade one just doesn't have the mass to drive the seal in, I had to use a mallet on the homemade driver to finish driving it (I didn't like doing that at all)  If I have to do it again, I'll buy the driver.

Pulling the lower fork bolt that holds the dampener rod out is tricky as is putting it back in.  You'll need a long allen wrench/socket/T-wrench.  And you need to order a new sealing washer for this.  Don't skimp as it's not easy to fix it if it leaks.

I would say if you're not a wrench but want to do as much as possible, pull the front wheel, fender, and calipers off, then pull the forks out of the trees and take them into he dealer.  That should cut your labor costs in half at least.

Another option would be to find someone in your area with the tools and knowhow and work a deal with them to help you.

My Right fork seal is leaking, too.  I took the forks off and took them to the wrench since I'm still under warranty for 3 days. :D  I hope it's covered, but even if not, too many tools to have to buy and not use them very often...............I hope.  Joe

Well, I've got all the tools except the proper seal driver (only have my homemade one).

Thanks guys.  I have to come up with some money, then I'll see what I'm going to do.
