Busted fork seal?
« on: September 16, 2008, 01:15:06 PM »

Mechanic says I have a busted fork seal and it will cost $400+ to fix it. Is he kidding me about the cost?

I got the same news from the dealer when I questioned the oil on my shocks. Around $400. Most of that is the time involved. You can save a lot of money if you do a lot of the work yourself to remove the front forks. You can cut that cost in less than half if you remove the forks and take them in only for the seal replacement. If you want to take it further, visit Bare's VTX page and see his Tech link on replacing the fork springs. http://www.bareasschoppers.com/  This will save you even more dealer costs in their time.

However, I was shown a neat trick by j1mmyj4m to clean my fork seals. As I was told sometimes dirt and such get in up under the seals and cause some slight leaking. As was my case. j1mmyj4m told me to use a 35 mm negative film strip to slip up under the seals and sweep it around the shock to clean out any dirt between it and the seal. This worked for me.  O0

Thanks!  O0

That's very good to know. I'll have to look into that when I get the bike back.

Biker's Bay in Euless did my fork seals on the 1300 for a little over a $100 a couple of months ago, don't remember the exact amount, but I remember they were 60% cheaper on labor and 50% on parts than Honda.
The 1800 might cost more but I'd call them and see.   O0  O0

Hey Mike if they can fix them for a little over $100 you better take it,  Honda west in fort worth fixed both of mine for $280.00.  Hope you find some help cheap.

I had both done at the Rockwall Honda - back the day I left for the BB Blunder - I think they charged me $250 and pushed me to the front of the line so I could make the trip.  I considered myself extremely lucky.

$400 seems outrageous.

After going through what I've been through just getting my tire mounted, I wouldn't get it done there anyway. But I'll be looking into it soon. O0
