Tap Kit in Houston? ... got it thanks!
« on: September 16, 2008, 04:26:34 PM »

I've bolt some chrome bolts to replace some various steel ones and replacing the bullet header bolts with a Chrome Hex set.
I need to Tap the chrome threads to get them to fit.
Does anyone have a Metric Tap set I can borrow?

Thanks

Two questions:
1: Is it an SAE (Inch) threaded hole that you are looking to change to metric.
If so, what size is the current thread, and what is the metric size you need.
size of SAE = diameter of bolt and number of threads per inch
size of metric = diameter of bolt in mm and distance between top of two neighboring threads
2: Is the hole you wish to re-thread chromed?
If so, this may present a problem due to the hardness of the chrome. You will have to remove the chrome from
the hole before running a tap through it or you risk damaging the edges on the tap or even worse breaking it in the hole.

Either way, let me know and we may be able to source something for you from up here.......in the metric north.

Wow Cat  :o :o :o
Hmmm... didn't consider thread count? Just figured if it's a 8mm bolt I removed, then any 8mm chrome bolt would fit in it's place?? No? They are metric and they are the 4 bolts holding the pipes to the heads. Which in itself is really weird because the Honda Parts Fiche for my 2003 "C" shows an 8mm NUT CAP. And not a bolt??
But no, the new chrome bolts I got are of the 8mm Hex nut variety. The holes are not chromed. I am switching to the Hex nut type because of the trouble I had getting a socket onto a couple of the original bolts due to the custom pipes I have. Also bought chrome for the lower shock bolts.
I also need to find the right size chromed Hex bolts to replace the steel ones previously used to pinch the trees. Those steel ones created a rusty mess and seized up.

Ok, an 8mm fine thread will measure 1.00mm between the threads and a coarse thread will measure 1.25mm.
Once we know which it is I can check at my local crappy tire and send ya the right one. should be cheap enough up here.

Careful on those shock bolts. Many chrome bolts you find around are very soft (Ace Hardware). Should be a hardness number stamped on hex head of bolt (i.e. "8.8", etc.), try and match that with replacement. If not you're asking for trouble at high torque.

Right thanks. I remembered this but forget if the higher number is the than the lower number or visa versa?
Is 8.8 > 10.9 or is 8.8 < 10.9 ?
