laptop in backpack?
« on: August 27, 2008, 08:11:45 PM »

Are there any issues or concerns when taking your laptop in a backpack on you bike that you should be aware of? Or for that matter tips or preferred types of backpacks?

Thanks

Carried mine in a soft sided case strapped to the top of my bags all the way to Denver for the Colorado Ride in July of this year.
I had no problems, but I did have a rain cover on it.   O0 O0  O0 O0 O0

I've got a large dell laptop. 17 inch screen I think.  I've had it in a back pack a few times. No problems.  I think as long as your not jumping railroad tracks your okay. I did tie the straps so they wouldn't let go just in case.

It actually was not a back pack  but the T bag on the sissy bar just wrapped it in another waterproof bag just in case.It made it just fine and even across some pretty bumpy roads  O0

how far are you going?  I carry my laptop to and from work every day in a backpack that was designed to carry a laptop.  I wouldn't take a long trip with a backpack on unless you had something you could "release" the bag to sit on.. if a bag is attached to your shoulders for a long trip..  well at least it starts to hurt MY back after only a couple hours.

I carry mine everyday, also. I've got it in a soft-sided laptop bag inside of my backpack. I keep the laptop against my back while riding. One thing I did notice before I started using a laptop bag to carry it in was some "wear" on my screen. It seems that the laptop was getting squeezed together and the vibration of the ride was causing the keys to wear on the screen. I keep my straps loose so that the bad actually rests on the bike somewhat. Greatly reduces shoulder strain from the ride. Tie the extra part of the straps off so that you don't get whipped during your ride. (I'm allergic to pain and loose strap ends cause pain when they flap against your sides. :o)

Finally, don't get a cheap backpack if you're going to do this often. The corners of the laptop (even protected inside of another case) will start to wear through the bottom of the backpack. You need some material there to make the backpack last for any time at all. I bought three wally-world POS bags before I got one from Bag King with a lifetime warranty. Which I'm about to test after three years.

I don't care what other people think. They don't do it very often!
Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

Got a backpack designed for laptops here, sometimes carry the laptop and my gym clothes back and forth in it. I generally don't like wearing a backpack while riding though.

I have one as well designed for a laptop.  They have a slot in the back with a velcro strap that the laptop slides into to keep it secure.  My ride to work is only 2 miles so any bag would probably work for me.

Sherri,

I ride about 40 miles to work and take my laptop on occasion.  I have a dell
and I carry it in the standard soft-side case that comes with a dell laptop, on
my back with the strap across my chest.  Never had any problems with that
and these Dallas freeways can be pretty bumpy at times.  O0
